Yup, and is surpassed by long-match games, like Civ V and Dota, and ofc Football Manager.

My biggest concern is not the player base, but the modders who will leave and never come back. I really hope that doesn't happen.

  3. I found a chart that says a little bit on this topic.
World of Warcraft Subscription Count Q1 2005 to Q1 2014
The peaks and valleys correspond to gaps between Free and Payed content releases. The clearest example would be Q3 2011 to Q3 2012; That was the 12 month gap between the end of Cataclysm and the release of Mists of Pandaria, during which no new content was released. Subscription counts dropped because of lack of interest, but they picked back up as soon as new content was released. No one is going to deny the downward trend in popularity of the game, but the point is, new content brings renewed interest from new and old players alike. Those who have left are inclined to come back when significant content is released.

That graph shows usage for a wildly popular MMO over the course of seven years (28 quarters) based in increments of 2.5 million users.

There are several reasons why a direct comparison to SB make that data irrelevant.

I don't disagree with your overall point, I just have a problem with the way it's presented.

  5. It was the easiest example I could find without actually doing substantial research (was looking it up for another reason altogether). A more granular time axis would most likely prove the point in a far better way. Blizz only publishes their Sub stats quarterly in their financial reports.

This isn't an MMO, so it's not really impacted by those kinds of stats. Multiplayer servers for games like this (or like Terraria, or Minecraft) are usually small groups of close knit friends, not massively populated.

Besides, a ton of people are waiting on the game to be fully released before they play it. Seven out of nine of my friends who own the game are doing exactly that.

The doomsaying is kind of silly.

  7. Doomsaying?... I wasn't saying anything of the sort. I was just saying that content is usually a motivating factor in weather or not people pick up a game. I'm sure the played times of games like Skyrim increased significantly when new DLC released and gradually declined back to a stable number as people lost interest.

EDIT: I've refined my argument using TES5: Skyrim instead of World of Warcraft.
Steam Stats for Skyrim 2012 On
You can see several peaks when DLC was released for the game, namely August 2012 (Dawnguard) and February 2013 (Dragonborn). It's a decent illustration of what I was trying to say. It's also clear that content isn't the only motivating factor, times which lend to more free time or the presence of gift giving (Xmas) also show a bump in played times.

@Fiben Bolger does this presentation express the point in a satisfactory manner?

Wasn't specifically responding to you, but rather, some very vocal doomsayers in this forum.

    It's called hype.

Edit: And starbound didn't live up to it.

Starbound lived up to it for me. Spent more time on it thus far than I have other, more expensive games.

Professionals know so much about their profession through statistics that bald old guys funding game companies are still makig COD games based off the statistics that those game sell, and for some dammed reason, havent figured out that the budget for that insipid mess of a racist game could be going for a new GTA, wich would in a literal sense, bathe them in cash and make the gaming industry way better.

Also, they spend millions in that mess when Indies that dared to go where the Giants havent have been racking up cash like crazy, with litle investment.

Statistics are bull, and they can fail a lot,for they never reach the totality, only just a sample, and who can trully verify the integrity of the sample?

GTA honestly never had the financial success of CoD to be fair. The last 2 CoD games raked in 1 billion dollars EACH from end of first month sales alone.
Don't get me wrong GTA is a great franchise. But it will not hold the edge to CoD - even though they are using some pretty amazing tech such as the Euphoria Physics Engine -

Agreed. Many major producers seem to be stuck in their own echo chamber.

Yet imagine another Saints Row,another GTA with the man power behind those insipid nuggets of copper, with the funding those "games" had,do you realy believe they could not rebvolucionize gaming?

Its certanly better than a racist shoot em up for 10 year olds,ya ateast have to give me that:p
