so I've been trying to play with my friend for weeks and we've tried server and tried LAN and it's nearly impossible I feel you should try to change the multiplayer system you shouldn't need to port-forward cause not everyone can do that as well as it's stupid and not quite user friendly (Try the terraria approach it's simple fast and user friendly) in such I love the game a lot it's a great game I love playing starbound and so does my friend we've tried and are still trying to set up so we can play together but it's so so very hard please try to change it so it's simple and fast so that you can play it with your friends.... anyway that's all please no hate and don't flag this form discussion for it is simply my input to make the game better even if my input is heavy it's all to improve the game.
Instead of setting up a LAN server, just go find a friendly server and begin playing with them! The more, the merrier. Also, last I ckecked, the Starbound multiplayer system is actually identical to the Starbound multiplayer system. Characters are saved differently from worlds and servers, any character can play on any server, then you enter in the IP and port of the server (99.99% of the time it's 25565), login and play! Not sure why anyone would use LAN when most servers are essentially the same, but maybe with 2 or 3 other players. Travel to a random planet, and it's identical to singleplayer. Get your friend to that planet, and it's identical to LAN. Then, if you have the guts, switch on PVP mode and slaughter other people at the Ark or the Outpost.
