The way Starbound is looking right now, it'll be a wonderful experience for groups of people to play together in a very open-world sandbox universe, like Minecraft and Terraria (Terraria being the closest to Starbound).

What has happened a lot and what is still happening is that groups of youtubers that are part of a tight community, like the Yogscast or the Mindcrack server guys (Both Minecraft related), have the majority of their content based on multiplayer experiences. They all have their signature stuff, that could apply to starbound (race and character customisation) but also how and where they decide to build their base.

From what's been confirmed here, you can state that there's many things to do on all the planets. Conquering, settling, farming, etc. What I think, and what I hope you will all agree with, is that having not only many activities, but many playstyles as a part of the game allows people to "have it their way". So far, there's not been a huge amount of gameplay footage about building besides the demo, and it struck me that some people might want to settle for something else than futuristic buildings with lots of metal. Some people might want a base in a forest (Treehouses perhaps) or a cozy wooden lodge on a hill.

I don't know what the plans are in terms of building and blocks beyond what has been said, but considering the players, the weapons and even the monsters are so customised, it'd be a shame to leave building behind.

    Some arbitrary ideas:

-Decorative types of stone, wood and other materials that don't have the standard.
-Cover blocks (the ability to place blocks above the player layer for aesthetic purposes)
    -Ladders for compact vertical movement.

I hope you're able to share this view with me, to make Starbound a better experience for all!

Firstly, props on the large non-wall'd and interesting post.

Secondly, starbound has a range of races which exist in different points in their own respective tech path, the humans being average, the apex look rather advanced, the florans look slightly primitive and the avians look like a very "ancient" style race. We haven't seen the others in action yet.

I'm going to assume that this will provide a range of prop styles based on their technological advancement, so far we've seen some of the props and buildings from the races, and each has a very unique style of building, props and material. In addition to this we have the randomly generated trees which may or may not provide different wood textures, but that in its own right is a different building material, and much more, I'm sure that the developers will have thought about the decorative and creative people in the community and provided enough decorative blocks to cover.

Thirdly, Cover blocks was discussed at some point, and as far as I can remember the developers trashed the idea, what exactly it got trashed for, I don't recall.
Also, ladders may or may not be in it, at this point we can't know :p

  3. I believe we'll be having a variety of themes, both in items/furniture and in blocks.

Take a look at this picture, for instance. It's composed by rather primitive materials, outfits, tools and blocks.

    Here's another non-futuristic genre.

    And a more medieval vibe.

    Thanks for your reactions.

My concern was, after seeing those pictures myself, that some of those styles would stick to being generated buildings, and we would not have the option to leave technology behind and live in a dirt hut like a primitive heretic.

Glad that eased your mind a bit. There is one small problem though:

every race has their own specific furnitures, which you will need to unlock if you do not play that race. so far the humans look pretty neutral, apex are very sci-fi, robots are medieval, hylotl are japanese-themed and the avians are aztec-like.

Those images just amazed me. Specially that marketplace. Oh god, and I was thinking that mostly futuristic things could be built
