It's not an amazing suggestion, more just an addition for fun that could come at a later stage: Perhaps make it so that the instruments respond to the angle you're looking at (so basically the mouse cursor's location). This WON'T replace the abc system, it will simply be an addition to it. It would work over an angle of 180 degrees (top), with the lowest note starting at the left side of the screen and the highest one at the right side, and all notes in-between would be interpolated over that angle, maybe within either one or two octaves (or make that configurable!). You would trigger a note by simply left-clicking while having the instrument equipped. That way you can improvise songs or use instruments for other purposes (role-playing, warning signs, messing around, etc etc etc). Thought this would be pretty neat to have at some point Note: once again, this will NOT be a replacement, it will just be an addition to the abc thing, you will be able to do both!
It's been done before in Terraria, where almost nobody picked it up, and the Starbound devs tested it before opting for the ABC system. The reason is simple: it's way too difficult.
It will not be a replacement.... It will be an addition to what you can do with them now. Edited the main post to include that. EDIT: also, I can't imagine this being difficult at all for simple stuff... It will just be a funny and minor addition to what you can do with them already. Imagine leftclick being that, and right click being the list for the abc songs.
