I'm quite curious to see, whether I and my company are the only ones to have solemnly sworn to wait for the full release before playing. I'm sure I'll be biting my feet during the public beta, however I think this self-imposed challenge will be well worth it.

I would imagine that, given the trend of games nowadays, and how 'finished' they want the game to be before they even put it into beta, we will be looking at a soft release, personally I wouldn't waste my time waiting, the difference between beta and release will be minimal.

I think you are right. I'm sure there will be very few differences from beta to release.

    I heard beta won't have quests/missions.

I will play whatever the forum as a whole is allowed to. (I don't want any special treatment, I wanna experience it just the same as the forum.) So I will be playing the beta. To me its just like early Minecraft or early Don't Starve.

I voted the second option. I've never really beta "tested" a game. I played the crap out of Minecraft since way back in the alpha, but never really with an eye towards actually helping the development of it. The level of communication between the devs and the community here is (as stated many times before me) pretty unprecedented, and really encourages me to actually get involved in the process of creation.

I'd probably just have a look at races and starting ships, then stop.

There's no "Finished" game nowadays especially like this kind of games... there's a lot of mods and updates going to be

To anyone saying "there's no such thing as a 'finished game' regarding Starbound":

Whereas you are correct, there are certain core mechanics and details to be polished, which can only be improved proficiently through intensive testing & feedback. There's a reason why developers and publishers decide to do a "hard release".
It's when the base of the cake is ready for the frosting. Comparatively, it might be barely noticeable in the end, but the difference will still be there. Small enough for some to be considered negligible, big enough for others to ultimately accumulate to a greater experience.

I will play in Beta. I am hoping that Beta will be feature complete (or nearly so) so that the focus then is on bug finding, polish and balance.

Even if you don't play it, its still cheaper to preorder the lowest tier now.

I'd like to say I'll wait for the full release before I play to get the full impact of the game. But lets be honest...if the beta comes out I will be playing it!

as an impatient human being that has being hyped for now months to a game that seems like the apex (get it ?) of its genre (which also happens to be my favorite genre), i seriously doubt im gonna be able to keep even a modicum of restrain when presented with the beta. Im in fact already playing some great half-way done games that were released early and i gotta say im loving it.

its just a matter of keeping a cool head and staying aware that you arent playing the full thing

I think that even if you play in Beta (reasonably), you'll still be able able to enjoy the full game since Chucklefish planned not to add the story (and questing ? ) and some other features before the release. So you'll have to separate experiences. But the choice is yours :D.

I don't know if I'm going to be too attached to the story mode because it'll take me about 1 year to be able to build a decent house, that's just not a wooden cabin, for my home world. But yea, I'm going to be playing the beta from beginning to when ever the game comes out, hopefully I'll be able to find a few bugs and be a useful beta tester for once.
