In starbound you will be able to be on different planets than your friends.
I believe we should see a chat notification telling the other players what planet you have entered, or tell everyone you returned to the space station. And hopefully listing the threat level.
It would be something like this.
Server: Player1 has Entered Example planet, threat level 3.
Server: Player2 has entered Example planet 2, threat level 20.
Server: Player 1 has returned to the space station.
However, I also think this could cause spam. If someone owned a large server, that person could toggle this feature off, but it would be in the server program where it is hosted.
Since some servers would have players "locked" onto one planet, this feature wouldn't be useful other than being used to see who just joined.

Can't you just use skype? I can't imagine playing online coop without it (well I can, but it'd be irritating)

I don't see why it can't be added, though. Seems useful enough.

Well, for one thing, a lot of people will just end up playing on a random server with random people. It won't be co-op per se, but more along the lines of just playing on the same server with occasional contact.

Anyway, I think it would be a good idea, although I don't think returning to the space ship justifies a chat message.

The base idea is good, but should be reworked a bit. The main issue with it would be that on big enough servers, there would be a spamming issue. There is more than a few way to answers this :
    • A simple on/off toggle, as said Epicroyal and WoxanWarf. On that point, I agree with WW that the toggle should at least be client-side. Having a double toggle (one client-side and one server-side) could also be done.
    • Filtering by location. The list of notification received could be based on where the user is going/coming from
      • For exemple, the notification could appears only for the planet you currently are on. That way, you'll now who is around, but won't be bothered by notice about some guys visiting a planet hundreds of light-years from where you are.
      • Another possibility would be to have a list of discovered and chose which planets you want to "watch". This method could even be "rationalized" using some kind of spying satellite.
    • Filtering by character. It would also be possible to only receive a notification for "friends" or something like that.
All in all, I am for this Idea.

    Simplicity Astral Cartographer

That would be a great idea, it would help inform the player as to where they were. And it would be a good feature to disable this at times, good thinking. There should also be something like Terraria had, where you saw their names, you can choose who you wish to see and they can accept/deny.

If there's PVP this could help griefers track down their victims.
The person being tracked should have to opt in. That way you only give your location out to people you think you can trust.
It could be an ingame fature like "Trade tracker signals". There has to be tracking otherwise how does respawning work?
Then locally, I could switch tracking on and off for those people I'm currently working with so I don't get spammed by Bob that can't decide what planet he wants to be on.

Otherwise, yes, I'd want this. It's definately useful.
