They're not quite ready yet. But I've stopped working on the other two races so I can focus on the frogs, which I have tentatively named the Froadl.

Here's the color sets I have so far:

If you guys can think of any color combinations you were hoping for that aren't there, let me know. New color sets are easy to add.

The Froadl is looking so intense. I'm getting megahyped for it.

Looking great, can't wait to test it out.

The ship is done enough that I'm comfortable putting it ingame for the time being. At least until I can think of more ways to greeble it to death.

    "Final" (lawl) progress gif:

Yeah, that's going to get improved. Anyway, now I only have starter sets, "hair" (subspecies details), and some odds and ends before I release it.

Here are some alternate pallettes. Anyone have a preference?

They are all looking oh-so-sweet, I'd have to go with Main, Purple, and Light Blue.

    I like the green/purple the best :D

    Which one?

I numbered the frames on the image to make it easier to point one out.

I've come up with a new face design for the Froadl that somewhat addresses their bizarre eye placement. Their eyes are still way up there, though.

They also look more friendly and less, well, ditzy. You can see both eyes on the males now, too.

    Anyway:

All that's left now is starter armor and subspecies stuff, the latter of which will work kinda like hair does for other races. I also want to improve the starter weapon's appearance a bit. After that, I'll temporarily remove the other races and release the mod!

The eyes are better for sure. The mouth may have one or two pixels too many at the end... Not sure... Like that it goes one pixel out at the top, looks more like a mouth now :)

Also, remember the emotes sheet :)

I erased all the emotes. My frogs never make facial expressions. Maybe there's botox in space.

I'll worry about it at a later time, emotes don't make much of a difference in terms of playability, and that's my concern atm.

I actually had a cool idea where one of the emotes would be the frog expanding its throat, but for various reasons none of the emotes available for me to work with are suitable.

So what I've done with hair is (afaik) unique to this mod. Instead of physical features, I'm adding something I'm calling "subspecies". The end result is that it looks like you're picking a subtly different race instead of different hair.

    Details, plans:

What makes these these features unique is that they change color with the skin color of your character - something hair doesn't normally do. I achieved this by making translucent masks, highlighting or de-emphasizing certain pixels with partially erased shades of black, white and gray.

It needs some refining, and the effect works dramatically better with certain skin colors, but overall I'm very pleased with how this idea turned out. Oh, and for those who liked the old Froadl look, there's a subspecies for you, too.

Since all the masks must be grayscale, they won't be getting color sets. That gives me an additional slider to play with. I'm probably going to end up using it for further subspecies tweaking. Sub-subspecies, I guess. That'll probably require some hexadecimal math on my part, but I think I can handle it.

Well, either that or I'll just give the eyes color sets. Seems like a bit of waste to use a slider on two pixels, but eyes are important, as single pixel things go.

Here are some simple ones I came up with:

Future iterations of this idea will add more substantial variations, like eyes.

I'm about halfway through starter gear. I have discovered firsthand that gear is extremely laborious to draw. Here's a kind of prisoner/hobo set I completed:

I'm low on ideas for starter gear. Do you guys have any thoughts on how these guys should dress at first? Or gear in general, really, I was just planning to make increasingly ornate iterations of the Frog Merchant's outfit, tbh.

Maybe things pertaining to where you could usually find them? I know frogs are around the swamp so maybe dress them like those who live near the swamp or something like that.

    Daimoth Scruffy Nerf-Herder

Yeah, but how would that actually play out? Should they have slime hanging off of them or something? IRL native cultures that formed around swamps don't dress much different, just barefoot and half naked.

Hm, perhaps Cajun undertones? Like they're from 19th century Louisiana? Kinda like Gambit from X-men, minus the womanizing. Or with the womanizing, who's to say?

Or voodoo. Maybe the Frog Merchants armor is supposed to have a voodoo theme? Voodoo is certainly closely associated with the swamp, especially in America.

Alright, tentative new art direction: Debonaire, voodoo-worshipping, pawn shop owners

lol your response actually helped me narrow it down, thanks :proper: this should be fun
