WIP Playable Unplayable Races

This mod will implement all the sentient NPC's that exist as playable races. Yup, even that one. For those keeping track, that includes the Agaran (the mushroom people you may have stumbled upon), the frog merchant's race, colorful villagers, and even Penguins will make an appearance at some point. Some of those races don't have canonical names yet, so I'm open to suggestions there.

The code is already finished, and the art, which frankly will be the vast majority of the work, will also be handled by me.

Froadl

Previews:

The working theory on the frog merchant's species, based on his attire, is that they have something to do with, or in common with, the Hylotl. And... That's all that's currently known about him. So far, he's the only representative of his species ingame. Let's address that.

Since the only Frog in the game is a merchant, I plan to characterize them as a shrewd people. Sometimes considered greedy or conniving, they are culturally predisposed to business dealings. Perhaps they are secretive (hence their scarcity), but ever present in intergalactic black markets.



So why are they so different than the Frog Merchant himself? Because of his size and girth, I had to re-draw them by hand. If I made the merchant playable as is, he'd be unable to equip any armor. That's why they're slimmed down. Fear not, the robes and bone antler things will return in the form of tiered armor. Also, their eyes will resemble his more before I'm done.


Agaran

After realizing that "The Agaran Menace" was written by a Starbound dev (imo making it canon), I'm re-characterizing my Agaran to something more in step with Chucklefish's version.

As a summary for those who haven't read it, the Agaran are apparently sentient but primitive, something like the Florans. They're also killing members of other races on sight for unknown reasons. It is somewhat implied that they procreate with spores. I might make them a single gender race for that reason. If I do make the Agaran unisex, however, they will not be overtly masculine, and I'll include plenty of feminine features for those interested. Still might make a female just for fan service points, though.

Oh, and an Agaran dropship has never been seen, so their ship going to be a stolen (but molded-over) Hylotl ship, similar to how the Floran ship is an overgrown human vessel.

Colorful Villager

A temporary name. Geno... Genosylphs. Genoplasts. Genowim. Gemo. No idea.

These guys are a race of mutated Apex created by, well, the Apex. Also, they all have retrograde amnesia due to whatever was done to them. They don't appear to remember how they got where they are, implying they were put there. By the apex, presumably.

Other than their strange appearance and the preceding information, nothing is known about them. I have absolutely no idea where to go with these. They don't even have two genders.

Nice concept for a mod! Especially keen on the mysterious frog people being expanded upon.

Oh, and my inner pedant needs me to comment on this:

Seems rather more likely to be derived from the name of the mushroom genus Agaricus.

 

That makes sense. I still like the idea of making them farmers. I probably won't make them quite as redneck as I was planning to though.

Someone did do the Agaran. I enjoy that mod and actually had it installed until I began work on this mod, but I get the impression that a lot of the fill-in artwork was cut/pasted from the Mario franchise.

 

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I think it would be cool Just didn't want you to make things in vain

 

I'm actually finding the Agaran the most challenging to work with. I have no idea what the artist who created them was going for. Are they supposed to be wrinkly, or are they scowling, or do they just have underbites? All of the above? What do you guys think?

Also, what would you guys like to see the Frog People called? I'm going back and forth between Froad and Malotl, leaning towoard Froad. Maybe combine them, Froadl? I'm just spitballing here.

That looks amazing! You think you'll add a female frog as well?

 

She's already in there, though I 'm having trouble making them look feminine. Aside from the shape of her head and her breasts, she's very similar to the males.

They look really good! Just a little advice, you should make them look similar to the frog merchant. For example, make the eyes pop out and look more frog like, change the hands and feet to a subtle 'webbed' design, like the merchant. This is a great start! A little more time, and you will definitely ace it.

Oh, definitely. From the OP:

My main concern is helmets. Their heads do not match up with the heads of other races very well.

Good work so far.

Also, I agree with the eyes.
And their head, IMO, makes it seem like they are stretching their neck and tilting their head upward. If they are this very sketchy race, then I would imagine a hunch of some sort, or, at the very least, a head that isn't like "Hey, look at my neck, guys!"

 

Well that's kinda what defines their look, just look at the frog merchant himself. That and the lighter colored underbelly. Every time I tried to tip the head forward (figuratively speaking), it looked like he had a snout, like he was a weird green fox or something.

 

Well, I think the reason the Merchant has his head up like that is to either excite potential buyers (that's a cool look!) or to show that he is of high authority (much like other cultures where the more decorated you are, the more important you are).

And also, if I am not mistaken, it looks like he is holding his hands behind his back, which would support both, and possibly even him checking out the buyer and thinking "He might have some money to spend on this stuff".

 

Actually, I think those green circles around his midsection are supposed to be his (rather bulbous) hands. They look like they can suck onto things.

 

Well then. Looked up on Starbounder (a wiki) and it has a GIF showing Ribbit in action (arms back and forth, breathing through his neck) and I now see that those are indeed his hands.

 

Release the download as a beta so we can play as the frog.
