Prehistory Long ago, on a distant planet at the very edge of the galaxy... There lived a race of strange insectoid creatures. Millions of years they have evolved in their own world, building a nests like termite mounds. Gradually, they developed a sort of "collective mind", which soon realized itself, and after that they became the dominant species on the planet. In a few thousand years the planet was like a giant anthill, and the "collective mind" thinking about what to do next? It was thought for several centuries, and finally from the surface into space went up first biological spacecraft... The next few thousand years have passed in a systematic and thorough space expansion. Once the planet got short on space, ZzZz (as they called themselves; it can be roughly translated as "We") passed on to the next and start all over again. This could have lasted a very long time, if one day ZzZz not met on its way the strange bipedal creatures. These weird beings for some reason did not want to be eaten or processed on the material for new their nests. They resisted, fought and acted illogically. The Swarm could not understand them. Then The Swarm decided to better study this new obstacle. For this purpose it created several autonomous shells that could move independently, and gave them a rough form of bipedal creatures. Within each shell were hiding a few thousand 'drones', managing its traffic and forming the individual mind. These scouts were sent to the worlds inhabited by humanoids, with orders to gather as much information as possible and come back. The Swarm waited a long time, but none returned... And after a few more decades a war broke out between the two colonies of ZzZz, which have gained an independent mind, and as a result all their planets became uninhabitable. Description "Hivelings" are descendants of the ZzZz scouts. They realized that the existence of a humanoid form has its advantages, and deliberately did not return to their native hive. Their "body" is a bionic shell, which are managed and moved by colony of microscopic creatures located inside. Each "drone" has a size of no more than an inch and a little more sentient than Terran bee. Colony build their body and cares of it; They retain the humanoid form, since it is easier to use the most common equipment, as well as not to cause a strong rejection of his interlocutors. Why is this getting downvoted? I think it's a really cool idea. Their reanimation sequence would be awesome!
