just a loose cannon idea i came up with that i'd like to see discussed here. everyone keeps suggestiong humanoid creatures. but what if we had one that was quadrupedal? like sentient space dogs, foxes, wolves, rabbits or something? or why not an alien of some sort? i imagine an anthropomorphic (but not humanoid) quadrupedal race to hold things with their mouths, speak via telepathy and have the ability to sometimes adjust their structure so that they can use their front paws as hands. (hence why they're smart and have a culture and etc) what do you guys think?
doesn't hurt to ask. i'm curious to see what the consensus is. for a good idea of how this race is going to behave like, think okami amaterasu but if she could talk. or all dogs go to heaven dogs
I hope you don't plan on these guys being playable, getting this play style to work with the way starbound operates now would take a lot of work.( Dozens of new animations, making custom tools and weapons they could hold) You haven't even mentioned anything of their culture or technology. And so far the way you're describing it sounds like you're going to just pick an animal and have them talk for the designs, which in my opinion is just plain lazy and uninspired.

I think you're asking the wrong questions. First figure out if the player sprites can even be structured so that they are wider than they are tall. If that's possible within the engine without modding something incredibly core to how the rest of the game works, then make a big rectangle and play the game with it and see if it's still playable and fun. Then just start implementing whatever quadruped strikes your fancy. You shouldn't implement a quadrupedal race because it was popular in a forum poll. You should implement a quadrupedal race because you wanted to play as a quadrupedal race.
hence why i'm asking this question. i'd like to play as a quadrupedal race. i've seen some pony mods floating around somewhere. wonder how that worked
If you already want to play as a quadrupedal race, why on earth are you asking us to pick which one? Just make the one you want to play as. This would be like if Bungie did a poll saying "what genre of game should we make now that we're done with Halo?" The assumption is if they can't figure that part out on their own, they're in the wrong line of work.
