Play when beta comes out, or wait for release?

I would love it if it comes with a mini story, with mini quests.
Think those prologue/epilogue intro in games, where you play as a commoner to see some junk.
It can be really short, but a great teaser for the full story ;D

As far as we can tell the system is already in place and Chucklefish has been pretty clear that all the key systems are in place. So, again, why work on quests if they wont be in the beta?

Can I just say, please stop using the word "mate". Its well and good to use it in conversation but when I see it written it just looks condescending. Furthermore "mate", as I've said above, all key systems are in place, and the kind of quest work they're doing at the moment doesn't appear to involve anything other than creating quests, not the quest system. If these quests aren't going into the beta, surely they can be doing something else.

For all we know, they've only created the skeleton of the quest system, and have only done that to be able to implement the tutorial. Unless anyone has specific information that they are actually working on trying to finish the quest system?

I'd suggest checking out the numerous previous daily updates updates where they demonstrated the quest system being implemented and Tiy's enthusiastic "We're finally getting into the stage where all the key systems are done and its really easy to add stuff." (paraphrasing)

Exactly - they implemented the quest system, presumably so that they could create the tutorial. I haven't seen any work on actual quests beyond some silly test ones.

Good point. I'll be rather cross if quests becomes a highlight in a future daily update prior to beta release.

Don't torture yourself. Just play the beta.

If I'm honest with myself, I know I really should wait till at least the end of the beta... but I don't think I have that kind of will power.

I really do think that the game without quests (or quests that are missing/broken) just won't be satisfying to me. I typically don't handle pure sandbox games all that well. Which is why I was so excited for Starbound in the first place as it seemed to have more direction than most sandbox-y type games.

I think if I can protect myself from playing TOO much and/or figuring out too many of the mysteries I won't suffer early burn out. Hopefully I'll have the strength...

They never said quests wouldn't be in beta. They said the STORY might not be in beta. Random missions are not story.

To me this would be like waiting for the Minecraft release and avoiding the beta. I'll be playing Starbound beta within the first hour of its release.

Play the Beta. Even without a story, you still have a giant sandbox world to explore.

Also you get used to the weight of the characters and the mechanics and controls.

imho, there is so much more to the game than "just" the story. of course its important but for me personally its just a minor part of the game.
it really all depends on you... i just dont think you can torture yourself till full release ;P

When the beta comes out you say...

Stage One: preparation. For this you will need: one room which you will not leave; one mattress; tomato soup, ten tins of; mushroom soup, eight tins of, for consumption cold; ice cream, vanilla, one large tub of; Magnesia, Milk of, one bottle; paracetamol; mouth wash; vitamins; mineral water; Lucozade; pornography; one bucket for urine, one for feces, and one for vomitus; one PC with internet connection; and one bottle of Valium.

I chose not to choose life: I chose something else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who need reasons when you've got Starbound?

On top of that, most of the " real story" will be the development of your character that YOU make up. To me, the "main story" will likely end up as a "side story" in the grand scheme of things when you add humongous servers with tons of players that you will have unimaginable amounts of interactions, events, and relationships with.

My plan is to have myself admitted to an asylum so that I can't play until the official release. :alien:

The thing is that even when released, there will still be mods and patches that further progress the game. I feel like the content of this game will increase for a long long time to come. I mean the main team promised to work on it for a year after release. Then they're going to have a side team still dedicated to it. So might as well just start at Beta and enjoy it for a long time.

It's very possible that the quests won't be implemented in Beta.

What the Starbound devs are calling 'beta' is actually what most game companies call 'release' so playing beta will be like playing release.
