Plans to make Starbound more technological?

Hey, this is not one of those threads where I complain about how some items seem to be very primitive compared to the advanced technology available in other areas, but I'm just wondering if there are any plans to make the technology more advanced. Things like changing the mining tool into something that isn't just a drill. Also, in a recent post, Mollygos mentioned staves. Do you think these staves will eventually be technology based instead of magic based? (If they aren't technology based already)

There is no magic in the game. Even when there supposedly is (i.e. Glitch wizards), it's really just technology in disguise.

What is magic but for science that we don't understand?

The ability to conjure fire with your bare hands and sheer willpower comes to mind.

There's already magically enchanted weapons in game, unless we're going to pretend exploding bones and fire/toxic/lightning damage weapons are some kind of scientific advancement

People take the sci-fi aspect of the game too seriously, as we can see from the numerous forum debates about growing trees in vacuum and the appropriateness of psi-staves and so on. I really feel like people who take issue with aspects of Starbound being "unscientific" are taking the wrong approach; the game was never intended to be hard sci-fi. I like to compare Starbound to Star Wars (in spite of the fact that I'm not really a fan of the series), in that the creators put greater emphasis on it being entertaining than being believable.

Look at it like a cartoon: it's silly, fun, and doesn't make you think too much. I'm fine with Bonehammers, despite the fact that there's no logical explanation for their existence, because, well, they're kinda badass. Semi-plausible techno-babble about how they work wouldn't increase my enjoyment of the game, because it's really not necessary in this particular genre.

I look forwards to more high-tech equipment being added to the game, of course. I'm not arguing against that. I just feel that it's better not to overthink these things. If the devs want to include oil rigs powered by the happy thoughts of intelligent space broccoli, more power to them.

I have no problem with psi powers, "magic" or anything like that, techno-fantasy or sci-fi with magic don't really turn me down. I'm "OK" with trees and fire in space and such, i think it's just look "sloppy" or say "stupid", like:"they could do better, create special "flora" for asteroid, etc.". But some things feels really out of place - focus on simplistic melee weapons and tools for almost whole game (yeah, i know backstory about crash-landing and such) while we have matter manipulator from the beginning and i'm pretty sure it feels like very high tech level sci-fi tool. Yeah, maybe our protagonist could not create such high tech stuff, but someone created the first one (crews anyone, NPC laboratories?). Why could not we get another one somewhere? And why give it to us as the starting tools in the first place? No wonder player expect more high-tech after such start. And where are tons of such small things which bugs me, but when combined together they start to annoy me.

Well it reminds me about Terraria a lot. I just don't understand why put so much thoughts into story and lore just to make so many things similar to Terraria, and not the best things. And i really don't remember anything in SB previews, interviews or other info about game being so cartoonish and sketchy. In beginning SB looked like rather proper Sci-fi cosmo game. IMO.

I hope so. But devs like to do things their way and their late answers pretty much are:"We do it our way, if you don't like it, use mods."

Yes, but I have a suspicion that they're really technological (possibly psionic) in nature. That would make sense, considering that the Glitch are a reasonably advanced race that still has medieval trappings and beliefs.

I'm not very sure either what the intended direction of the game is at the moment... Especially after the "staves" announcement. Could try to call em something different in-game perhaps (Psi-Rods for instance).

I don't mind a mish-mash of magic and technology, but we already sorta have that in terraria, although slightly less futuristic... Would be nice if Starbound's futuristic theme could come out stronger than it is right now, because so far the only futuristic thing in the game that manages to stand out is the ship and its warping capability and perhaps some of the apex/human stuff.

Perhaps more content is on the way to support this : P

Psyonic is just a fancy term for magic.

If anyone is interested, nano machines are a very real thing today. Scientists hope to perfect the technology and use it to attack cancer cells.

Haven't you seen the Sherlock Holmes movies? They explain that "conjuring fire" is really just setting up a gasoline sprinkler outside your house and pre-emptively loading your enemies' guns with flare rounds before you invite them over for a dinner party. Duh, it's technology!

Also, if magical attacks aren't in the game, can we have mystical attacks? =P
