Planetary "Sieges"

    Imagine:
Randomly, while exploring some new, but fairly harmless planet, the sky begins to redden. You didn't bring any of your powerful ballistic or energy weapons, because the planet wasn't hazardous enough for you to feel the need to go all out. Suddenly, in the back ground, you see a couple of silhouetted ships flying across the back ground, and suddenly, once they're out of view, you begin to see bombs dropping around you, and fires and the like spreading. Making your way back to your ship post-haste, you encounter several enemies NOT native to the planet, which are several levels higher than the natives, and pose a challenge to you. What you're witnessing is a planetary siege.

The Logic:For one thing, it's silly to think that the player is the only one who's doing planet hopping, and even sillier to think that any others are in it for..."noble" reasons. The idea is that the player just has a run of bad luck, and happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and that some form of raiding party has arrived to wreak havoc on the planet. This also serves another purpose:
Players who visit weaker planets might begin to get a little comfortable with themselves, on account of essentially overkilling just about anything that looks at them strange. The idea here is that these "Siege Parties" can and will attack ANY planet (with the exception of Homeworlds, where the opposition would be too strong), and are leveled with the player, which can catch any unprepared player off guard. Causing massive damage to the environment and destroying plenty of resources, these brutes can be a major pain.

What do you think? Done before? Any ideas and criticisms you have to offer are appreciated!

This is a WONDERFUL idea! It should be rare though, otherwise it would just get annoying, and only after the player has met certain prerequisites. They could also induce one to happen by hiring someone to talk about the player to pirates or something. It would, in that way, function a little bit similar to the Goblin Invasion in Terraria-in a GOOD WAY!

Oh it should most definitely be rare, I agree there. And see, which would be better? a Level Prerequisite, or some sort of quest?

I'd say both, actually. Since this is Starbound, there should be different pirate groups or whatever they are who can attack you. To be attacked by any at all you'd have to complete a certain quest in the main story-line, and for some of the others you'd have to complete other, probably less important quests. You would also unlock more difficult (and, of course, randomly generated) enemy groups as you level up after the initial quest. As another feature, aggressive pirate groups would unique to each player, the idea being that only certain pirates know about certain players (with the exception of those unlocked by quests). But, if two players are together and a player-specific group attacks one player, the other player then becomes a target for them. Piratical viruses!

Mm, good idea. Same for if you're in space or whatever, pirate attacks. One thing about games like Fallout and the like that really irks me, is your relative safety.
Normally, you don't get into trouble or conflict unless you're LOOKING for it, it's much more challenging if you're not prepared. Maybe impose a time limit for assaults, if you don't repel them within a certain time, they establish a base or something.

The Codex Astartes approves of this action. Something like this would keep gameplay challenging and keep you on your toes.

Love this idea. Though it would be cool if you could take over Pirate operations by killing the leader.

Another reason I like this idea is enemy raids in games tend to have the best soundtracks....and we've all seen who's scoring the game...

Maybe you could threaten the pirates to a point where they'd be too scared to attack a planet you own or live on.

I think that near the very end of the main-story line (When your all bad-ass) They should attempt to attack your home-world once, it would be a MASSIVE invasion that alone, or even with friends, you would not be able to be in enough places at once to stop it. Forcing you to have to have already built turrets and the like to slow down the invasion. (It should also have epic-ass music, as well as be toggle-able for servers)

I can just imagine an hour long battle with pirates, afterward having to comb your world to find forward-bases and bunkers they set up during the raid. Or having an epic last stand with your friends in the center complex, which has had multiple breaches, pirates pouring in all around you. Your enormous complex that you spent weeks making, being destroyed before your eyes. Commanding trained and untrained NPC's to positions, arming them with your leftover weapons, to attempt to defend your home. Then, when its all over, you standing in your ruined base as the pirates drop a last wave of bombs and finally retreat. That would be epic :)

And horrible. I couldn't stand having so much destruction to something that like you said, took weeks to build.
