Planet scan.

    It's not a case of it being "back", I don't think it was never implemented. This is just a concept art screenshot. Hopefully it'll be added to game some time before release.

    I've seen many others requesting most of the stuff displayed in that mockup image. I would very much like to see the planet scanner myself.

    Planet bookmarking has been requested constantly though.

    I think with how big the universe is the scanner really better be coming because there's simply too much to explore to be doing so completely blind. It doesn't need to be super detailed, just vague enough to give you a sense of the possibilities of the planet. Like it shows now, what ore has an extra presence, what structure types are present and hopefully what type of humanoid life signs are detected.

    Something like that could be implemented later into the game that would encourage players to go back to old sectors to check things they might of otherwise missed.

    They could use this as a way to create scavenger hunts, where they add in a unique event to a certain planet and offer coordinate as a starting point. They give a hint as to what to look for when scanning the planet and when you find the proper planet you land and investigate the odd location. Then the npc, item or event would occur causing you to go to another coordinate and scanning planets in said sector til you arrive at the final destination for a rare/unique reward.

    I think a way to look at it now, is the ship just isn't at the stage to be able to scan planets that way, much like how we use pickaxes because our tech level isn't at the stage to allow us to craft more advanced tech, plus the resources needed to make said tech might not be available.

    It will be interesting however if the mockup above does make it back in some way, would be fun to see a pre-scanner before landing on a planet.

    Yeah, this is something I hope makes it back in too. It would add a lot to the exploration aspect of the game, even if it requires you to upgrade your ship in some way first before you can do it (or it requires fuel to scan a planet or something). I'd get so much fun out of just flying around scanning planets.

    I'd especially like to see it tie into world gen as well, like in the mockup it says "huge gold deposits". That could just be refering to the fact that there's lots of gold there naturally because of the threat level of the planet, but it would be cool if some planets just have an abundance of a particular resource (it doesn't have to be ore, it could be some sort of other resource like crystals, or a particular plant, or whatever else we're going to need in our travels), and you were able to scan for those.

    I ma hopeful that we will get some or all of this functionality before release. However I tihnk you shoud lat least be in the same solar system for this to work, if we just know the fine detials of every planet we click on, it will be quite boring.

    I like how this shows a window into the original uniqueness of planets. Such as differences in deposits, atmospheric conditions (I'd really like to see toxic/radioactive/whatever atmospheres brought back into thought), and travel mechanics like a history and bookmarks. It's all very nice, and I'd like to see much of it make it's way back in.

    a scanner would be pretty awesome but it should have a balance along with it,
    LIKE maybe you have to be at the planet to scan it, so players have to use resources to get to the planet and keep the games "exploring value" alive
    and not some only jumping to planets with *random things* and skipping 93% of everything that doesnt have it

    if anything id like a bigger ship (for storage reasons im abusing the 3D scanner putting items in when im not flat broke)

    I really wan't a planet scanning system but it would kinda defeat the whole purpose of exploring every planet, Maybe the scanner could say something like "Settlement Detected" and "Large amount of Rare Resources"

    ANYWAYS id would all depend on resources and % of ore underground depending on the kind
    but i do support your idea id like to find diamond underground one day (or platinum)

    I kind of hope the old nav design interface makes a come back. The one we have now is sleek but I prefer the concept style.
    Also plant scanning in a vague way would be nice. Just to let you know some interesting things, even if its only available when you get there.

    I've been hoping this would eventually be implemented. It is a NECESSITY.

    I do think it should something you have to earn (not too laboriously)

    It's been discussed a lot as of late - I hope they bring it in.
    At the planet - Low pixel cost to perform a rough surface scan (Could include a simple map showing the surface off in monochrome)

    Same system - Medium pixel cost (Sending a probe)

    Different system - High pixel cost (Sending a long range probe - Could take an hour to complete)

    I don't know if atmosphere is implemented or going to be, but everything else on that scanner is something that does exist as a variable so this could definitely exist with a little work.
