I've just been lurking around, looking at ideas for environments and planets.

I've searched the forum and it showed that there is no thread talking about any events like Volcanic erruptions, so if these type of events on planets are implemented or will be implemented please tell me, and if not here is my suggestion.

In a fire based planet, you can have a random event which will cause a volcano to erupt, making it so that you will have to run away and find high land, or go underground and hope you don't get caught in the lava.

Avalanche in ice based planets to maybe keep you trapped in a cave so you have to find a different way out.

A sand storm in a sandy planet to keep your vision to a minimum and slowly deplete of your health until you find shelter.

All these events could be countered by maybe some sort of items, for example sandstorms can be fought against by a special pair of goggles you can purchase or a little camp, or you could always dig underground to avoid it. A type of shield which keeps you from dying in the Avalanche and once the avalanche had stopped, the shield will drill you back up to the surface.. Just a little idea I have at 4 AM, again if this will already be implemented please do tell me. C:

That would be pretty interesting. I mean, why not have volcanic planets spewing lava into the air to create an infernal rainstorm? It would be interesting to see...

The idea of random planetary phenomenons is very interesting.

Perhaps it could be like terraria's system, where the game would alert you of something occurred.
Obviously it would be much more complicated, but it could be similar...
Imagine if the planet was going to implode and you had to run to your ship, barely making it, and losing some of your NPCs along the way!

This actually has a lot of relation to the other thread I just posted in, with the suggestion of potential for Earthquakes.

I really like the idea of planetary events and phenomena, because it adds just a pinch of realism with a dash of strategic planning. You would definitely need to do some scanning and observation of worlds before going and settling on them, or else risk having a volcano turn all your hard work into a magmatic crater... or a sink-hole swallowing all that precious ore you just dug up.

Maybe on fire worlds it could rain fire, making you have to find shelter, and on acid/poison worlds rain acid rain. That would be interesting.

But you would need a way of fortelling these events (E.G. Darkening clouds) or the game would just become too annoying because you won't have time to plan for such events.

Yes of course there will always be telling of when something dangerous will happen just like in real life. Such as dark clouds and thunder before the rain, or a little earthquake to show that a volcano will erupt or something of that sort.

Or, since this game is obviously sci-fi, we could go a step further and have actual alarms and warning sensors on equipment we've designed in order to predict catastrophic events like fire raining down on our heads.

I can see it now, a couple minutes of warning that an incoming cloud of deadly ash is about to sweep through your immediate location, followed by a mad dash back to the bunker, where your nice big silo doors close and seal off the potential cloud from getting inside. I'd love a mechanic like that!

*Gasp* Oh no! I left the window open! X(
Reminds me of the old rpg's that had you actually make thoughtful decisions.

Floods on a vey water based planet? The sea level would slowly rise to eventually engulf you precious base. ; )

Unless.... you waterproof it with the tar from the swamp! Or, you would be forced to move to higher ground.

This is exactly what Starbound needs to make it even more interesting. An unique idea!

could work out well if the events were rare like terraria's meteorite

The game would get really annoying of your planet just kept getting flooded or exploded all the time.

Did you ever play Terraria, and have you ever got annoyed by the meteorite event, also stated above? No, I think Tiy has enough experience to do this right.

Lol what if your planet flooded and exploded at the same time, 0_o
Then there should be some portal that brings you to some awesome paradox land or something.

This sounds like a great idea. I would love to see something like this implemented. Maybe on less unique planets (unique ones being lava planets, ice ones, etc.) there could be hurricanes that would throw you around and carry you up in the air. You could suffer fall damage or be hit by debris. You could counter it by going inside or underground.

EDIT: Better yet on gas giants instead of regular planets. Or both...

No planet is safe from Mother Nature, and besides if these events happened on a colony it should spring an event to assist in evacuating the colonist to safety, but thats just my idea. I do enjoy the thought of Natural disasters.
