Planet Difficulty vs Tiers

    Hello,

This may seem obvious and may have been answered somewhere else and if it has, I apologize. I noticed in the gameplay videos that planets seem to have a 1-10 number label indicating difficulty. Are these difficulty numbers directly associated with tiers 1-10? If so, is there any variation as to what can be found on a planet of a specific difficulty or is it strictly going to have gear/loot from said tier in it?

    Thanks for any insight.

They aren't directly related to the planet level. That just means what level the creatures on it are I believe. With that said the higher level the creatures, the higher the tier. Like, levels 1 thru 5 could be tier 1, and you'll see iron, copper, silver, and gold.

And. Level 1 thru 5 creatures each with a tier 1 set of abilities.
In short no I don't believe that the planet difficulty is the tier. I believe it goes up to 100.

Basically we don't know for sure at this point.

I was wondering about that myself; what the distinction between "level" and "tier" is in Starbound.

  5. Well, it has been stated (no proof sorry) that planets are leveled by difficulty from 1 to 100. So basically at the start you can visit only lv.1-10 planets, and when you complete tier 1 then you unlock lv.11-20 and so on. Don't quote me here though.

Trying to find some mentions of it, but yes I'm pretty sure planets scale to 100. I wouldn't think it would be too terribly hard to get there seeing as how skill and equipment inflation rates work in various games.

For example once you hit a certain threshold of gear in a game, you can make rapid strides towards harder content than it took you to reach the point of inflation.

In terraria it's iron. Once you have iron you can very easily get demonite, and then molten stuff going on from there. A non sandbox example could be skyrim, once you learn the turn undead/absorb health/banish enchants around levels 10-30, your enchanting and by extension smithing and alchemy explode skill wise, letting you reach the higher levels in hours.

One more example haha, getting azura's star early in any ES game past dagger fall (havent played that one much) early and you pretty much win right there.

I seen the same thing posted by blue yesterday.

    Tier 1 = level 1-10
    Tier 2 = level 11-20
    Tier 3 = level 21-30
    ETC.

Muahahaha. Seriously though, muauahahah. No, I do like that idea of unlockable progression in some regards. I can imagine certain people would prefer to make large leaps through content as their preferred play-style though.

Personally, I'm a hoarder. I think I'll end up collecting (or trying to collect) one of everything. So I anticipate investing several hundred hours into this game over time. Can't wait! *excited 10-year-old girl scream*

Ooooh, that would definitely deal with that whole progression inflation theory of mine. These devs think of everything!

We really will never know until the game comes out, but there are plenty of theories floating around. From what i understand, there will be a total of 11 ranks, 10 for standard play, and the last 1 locks you into a permanent PVP state. I remember hearing this one a video from one of the Devs, which one would take me a while to find. It was during the I49 event. So lets assume i am right... 100 levels of difficulty arent that hard to fathom with 10 levels per tier. And since they already said that they will be releasing beta with 3 tiers that gives us all 30 levels to mess with. =) Happy Planet Hunting guys! Just hope they make sure you land on a level 1 planet to start with.

You are correct, if anything its going to be an Item Level system. Kind of like World of warcraft has both Character level and then ILvl. You can be a 100 level warrior with 200 levels of equipment. Only Starbound is going to be something like EVERYONE is lvl1 and your equipment is how you "level up" An Iron sword may be considered level 2 and your hat may be level 4 so your effectively your level 6 kind of deal. Again, this has SOME speculation.

huh? I thought that they want to prepare all 10 tiers before they release the beta... Or maybe they will release it sooner with 3 tiers as a starter thing and will add subsequent tears as they are ready

Thank you Serenity for the back up/Assistance :coffee:

  17. I actually kinda hope it won't be like that.
I was looking forward to starting a new character, and seeing how long I can survive on a lvl 100 planet. [IMG]

I'm confident I saw somewhere that planet levels depended upon what sector they were in, and you need to do something special to unlock each sector. Nothing hacks can not fix though

Also, I think the devs are going with the equipment levels idea. Like, when you get item C and its corresponding armor set, you gain the ability to get Item D and its set.

I like the fact that lvl 100 planets will be tough NO MATTER WHAT...
