I love the game. Exploring and mining are really fun, and the multiplayer is a blast However, pixels should not be used for crafting. Exploring and finding materials and components for recipes is fun - after finding a big iron vein or a new material from a dungeon, going back to base to smelt it and see what I can build is really enjoyable. However, finding out that I need to go grind another 300 pixels to make that new piece of armor is not fun. Requiring pixels to craft gear can also cause pixel starvation. In essence, I need pixels to upgrade my gear so that I can fight monsters, but without upgraded gear the monsters kill me, causing me to lose pixels. In this loop, I never get the pixels I need to upgrade my gear. Thanks!
This is the player's fault in the long run, as you're trying to kill monsters that are clearly too difficult for you. Kill easier monsters.
Combat in Starbound is pretty hard; personally, I have a hard time killing enemies without cheesing. I can definitely see someone getting frustrated grinding pixels, especially since there's a pixel penalty on death.
Personally, I think its easy to harvest pixels. You just have to find low threat dungeons. It reauires a bit of exploration, but its not that hard in the long run. Its time consuming, but this game isnt meant to spoonfeed its players.
Is there a good reason to require pixels for crafting though? It seems to me that it purely detracts from the fun of crafting.
Pixels being a cost is a fine mechanic in my opinion. Otherwise the materials would be too easy to farm. Once you have a refinery, pixels become an automated process.
Pixels are fair enough for crafting; let's say they're what help you add the full structure to the armor. Like, say, the fabricy bits.
what would be the point of killing monsters if they took the pixel cost out of crafting? Everything else that uses pixels is primarily peripheral to the gameplay
I agree with lordzale you get stuck in a loop an it seriously limits exploring because you need to be extremely careful. On the other hand im quite excited to see what influence the announce change to the level system will have on this.
As it is now, I can just casually stroll around a TL21 planet and swing at things and within MINUTES I have enough pixels to craft just about anything I want. On average per life, I kill enough things to gain about twice what I would lose by dying once. Often more than that.
