Pixel Storage - "Voxel Boxes" are *not* the answer

Both the death penalty and the compression penalty are methods of the game saying STOP SUCKING AND BE SMARTER THAN AN ANIMAL THAT CAN LEARN FROM ITS MISTAKES. Do I need to get any more blunt than that? It is not to be a cash sink or to punish the player it is meant to encourage the player that dieing recklessly is not a good play style. The reason there is the compression penalty is because a death penalty is meaningless if I can just circumvent it with no cost.

For the last time, we are not discussing the death penalty in this thread. We are only discussing the Voxel Box system of compressing pixels. That is all. If you want to discuss the loss of pixels on death, please do so in another thread. There's a very large thread on this subject already.

Again I ask why not both systems? Thus allowing for system that doesn't use inventory space AND the ability to leave chests full of pixel bars or whatever the physical fom would be.

I would have no problem with a more fluid way to address the storage system. As it is I can see the issues with the discreet boxes and how it could lead to a conflict where you need only 1k pixels but only have a 10k voxel.

They aren't any more prone to take space and being stolen than any other item. Chest security is a separate issue...

Ok. I will only talk about the compression of pixels and nothing else. Since somehow talking about a system outside of the game is somehow relevant to how it works with everything in the game.

Arguments like this are why we have basically a mod as our answer to pixel compression. Just because it's a separate issue, doesn't mean it isn't an issue. When you half-bake something like this and use a mod to fix it, of course it will be prone to issues. Which is why you should treat this whole thing like.. I dunno.. A developer who has over 1.5 million dollars should treat it. And make a professional, clean and easy to navigate system of storing pixels.

40 percent seems a little steep, no?

If I went to bank of america to deposit a check, there is no way in hell I would do it if they took 40% as a storage fee..

Hence why I called it an issue.

He adopted an idea for a mod. You say it like a user created idea is somehow less effective when this game has quite a few of them already. Why bother with the short sited solution of changing the voxels as opposed to just addressing the issue of chest security? That way, all items, including your money would be safe.

You do know banks charge you a fee every month if you do not use your debit card or have a certain amount in your bank account, right? And that almost all banks charge you a fee if you use any ATM machine that isn't part of their bank, right? Banks work like that all the time. A 40% deposit fee for ATM use is very acceptable. If you have 10k pixels to deposit, chances are you have no issues acquiring money in the first place. If you're at such a level where you can't afford a 40% charge, then storing pixels isn't going to be much use to you anyway.

When you're setting on 2 million dollars and you use the most frustrating method of storing pixels and clearly use a mod that someone else already made to do it, then yes. I expect professional work from people who sit on 2 million dollars to do. This beta exists for feedback and stuff, and I'm sorry if it offends you, but using a mod as the default method of pixel storage that creates more problems than it solves, is not the answer.

if they want to make pixels a building material, then that's fine. But nobody in the entire world goes around melting down their coins into a super coin for easier storage. And if they do, they have many issues that need to be worked out.

Eh... is there really a bank where they take 40% of a deposit in an ATM?

I don't have any fees on a checking or savings account for the next 5 years no matter what i withdraw or deposit, no matter what the amount is in the account either.

What bank are you with? o_O

Maybe not 40% but many banks charge hidden fees. This is why I use a credit union.

I wish to urge Tiy and crew to seriously reconsider the Pixel Storage method. A clean, professional method of storage with a GUI and everything rather than yet another machine would be extremely welcome. it would show a degree of professionalism you'd expect from a title by Chucklefish. Clean, efficient and easy to use are the ways you should approach making a game.

Why do you consider what they want to do unprofessional?

Just a little note - people who haven't themselves worked as programmers or have a basic idea of actual development costs shouldn't just assume that just because the figure has six digits, it's an endless supply of wealth.

It's not a clear cut case of "at X amount you can expect Y quality of service".

Because anyone with 5 minutes of time can edit a file in their assets folder to do the exact same thing. In fact, they already did. The idea of Pixel Compression was literally taken from the author of the very same mod. They just slapped a 40% fee on it and shipped it out the door. I appreciate giving a pat on the back to the community, but during this early of a beta, the last thing you want to do is to show that you are taking the easiest way you can to make unique, fun and interesting features.

The asset files can easily be edited by anyone. Creating a new machine that can compress pixels can be done by *anyone*. Adding new biomes takes all but 5 minutes, for instance.

I doubt this banking system will last very long. it'll probably be changed in another update, when they realize that it
s actually a fairly silly idea.

The compressed pixels or voxel implementation goes against the original design principles behind the current pixel system. If they wanted pixels to be a physical item that took inventory space, why wasn't it done as such in the first place? Why change it now? By making this change, the economic impact of a pixel has drastically been altered. The fact that your 'money' can be stolen or that it's now a burden is an issue that needs some thought.

Furthermore, why make another doodad to compress pixels into voxels? We already have a 3D printer. Shouldn't it be able to handle storing pixels since that is the resource it needs to function (much like the ship's fuel)?

    My thoughts:

The death penalty and pixel compression penalty are all direct results of how hard or easy it is to find pixels. I personally think finding pixels is too easy and should be dramatically reduced (reduce the pixel drop rate for those little objects that spew pixels when they break). Once pixels are harder to find, there's very little need of a penalty at all or 5% to 10% max. The 3D printer should be able to store a certain amount of pixels on its own, but limited like the ships fuel. Unlike the ships fuel, pixels should not be items. This prevents defeating any penalty and does not make pixels a burden or more at risk.

When I think Chucklefish, I think of the wonderful ABC music system that's fun to use. I think of the unique, amazing ships, the wonderfully designed dungeons and unique items. I don't think of a poor man's pixel storage of voxels. I don't think of them making something like a cardboard box with 10,000 pixels in it. That's what I expect from someone who makes Skyrim mods of dildos.
