Pickaxe animation thoughts

Hello everyone, before we get started I want to introduce myself. My name is Torren, and I'm a recovering minecraft / terraria addict. The pickaxe is probably the source of all my woes, my gateway drug. This powerful tool exists to dig up the ground in search of ore and building materials. With this knowledge in hand I would compulsively terraform the ground and nearby cave systems making everything as uniform as possible. But that's not the point of this thread.

I'm using a YouTube video of the August 18th chucklefishlive stream as reference. Link is at the end of this post.

At around one hour Tiy has been using a pickaxe for awhile now, and the animation and use of the tool are familiar. The same way we've been using the tool, waving it around like a wand, in both minecraft and terraria. One more short bit about a past experience before I continue, although I'm sure you know the point I'm about to make. My grandfather owned a pickaxe that he would let me use as a small, destructive child. One thing comes to mind when I think of those days. The pickaxe as a tool starts with a heavy and very sturdy shaft of wood. This is topped with a large shard of shaped thick metal; a pointed end for the pick and a flat shovel on the other end. Now back to my point, tools like the pickaxe are heavy. Very heavy, and too heavy to be used as a wand.

I propose that instead of a flimsy wand animation for the pickaxe, you perform a second or two long animation that deals a proportionate amount of damage to stone, ore, and other earthly debris. This gives the pickaxe a solid feel that I believe is missing from various streams I've missed. ( not to mention other games! )

One more edit, consolidating a response before I sit back and watch for any discussion. The mining speed would be comparable to as it is now. The only difference would be the added immersion of needing to find your stance and striking the earth! For example, in four seconds you wand the stone to death, or strike it twice.
What do you think? Do you like the current animations? I don't know how many tiers picks will be used for before being replaced by more advanced tools, but for the duration of holding a pickaxe are you alright wielding it like a lightweight water noodle?

    Here's the reference video.

Thanks for the time if you read this.
Edit: fixed a small misplaced word. Silly ipad

  2. First of all, it has been said that the animations aren't final, so don't worry too much about them yet. They will probably be changed. [IMG]

Second, while your idea could add immersion to the game, it might also be bothersome since it would take a while to mine.
It would be nice if they made a balance between realism and speed, although it might be quite difficult. Any ideas?

I personally like the current animations of the pick axe. Better than terraria where it goes around in a complete circle.

Maybe pickaxes are too heavy for your flimsy human arms. But with superior Hylotian strength, swinging a pickaxe is as simple as waving a wand.

I'm a floran, my arms are made of plant fiber or something. :<

How do you know that race has more strength, the race bonuses are in the armor meaning all the races have no real special base stat...in conclusion your RP failed the fiction logic presented.

It should be noted that there are smaller lighter one-handed pickaxes IRL too, though they obviously aren't as effective.

    I vote for this.
I like it when things seem like they have the weight they ought to have behind them. Things like proper big ol mechs moving slow or large swords being slow to swing.

    More like this, please.

This will definitely make dirt-digging a lot harder, as now dirt is broken in merely fraction of second. It would be too much to rise time needed to brake dirt to half the time of breaking stone, imo.

Also they can mine blocks on the other side of blocks, I'm not exactly sure how you plan for a more realistic animation. "Phew this is a heavy pick axe that can hit stone on the other side of stone."

    Crafting shovels maybe?

Yeah, let's craft a separate tool for every block type. Gonna be cool.

I'm not that fond of current pickaxe animation either. It's not actually that bad, but could be better. But it's alpha, so it can change. Not on the top of priority list I assume. I would be fine with after release new animation.

  14. Doesn't bother me none. While the finished animation will be a bit more streamlined, it's better than the Minecraft or Terraria dig animation in it's current state.

I like how you can break multiple pieces or single pieces at a time by holding down a key, we all know how much of a pain it is to have to break every. single. block. at. a. time.

Not really tough shovel sand, dirt, gravel clay. Pick minerals, stone. Axe, wood. The basics it's not like every single block will need a tool. I am guessing what I have listed only applies to tier 1 I am sure higher up effective multipurpose tools will exist.

Or higher tier materials may need their own tools, which is not welcome , imo.

    Well, I welcome it.

Well, I don't think it is a good idea if you need to carry 10 different tools just to dig through some blocks

I think you may be jumping to conclusions.

I think that's an odd thing to want in my opinion.

It's more likely that the higher level planets will need better tools but that those better tools will replace lower level ones rather than simply be a new class of tool.
