i think even having a simple physics engine would greatly enhance this games "fun factor" what do you think?
Do you actually have an idea for this? I mean its great to say "I want this game to have a physics engine." but what do you mean? we are apparently going to get decent fluid physics, a possibility of block types that fall is obvious, but is there anything else you were thinking of? possibly something like King Arthur's Gold has?
What does he have? Anyway, i think if they are going to give us fluid phisics it will be necessary to give us phisics engine aswell. Tell me guys what do you think, what this engine should have on minimum. I dont know what will be too difficult or complexed to implemnt into Starbound.
All they have announced so far on physics is water physics and water pressure. Well i think thats all they announced so far.
No. This would eliminate the ability to build fun structures or floating ones, also, I don't see that fitting in at all. It would also (I think) be hard to program in considering the different levels of gravity that will be randomly generated for each planet.
It is a game, basically a combat focused game with some building elements, but the interesting thing is that buildings actually have physics to a degree.
I said nothing about fun... I think that type of game would be fun. However, blockbased building (especially since the main part of this is supposed to be exploring) doesn't fit with that. Imagine trying to build a one block thick diagonal line. You would also dislodge huge chunks while mining. You would have to come up with some animation for that, plus think about craters forming, crushing npcs, when building your homeworld you accidentally dislodge something and kill all of your hard earned npcs below... Edit: I see where you saw the word fun. If you look at it though, its not fun, its fun buildings. I.e. super wierd, diagonal lines, abstract buildings with limited supports since they would ruin the look. Its 2d so you would see the supports.
Because floating structures still look floating with background blocks stretching from the ground up. I dunno about you all, but I'd rather have an actually, y'know, floating base.
Indeed. Though, Minor physics would be fine (like sand), and if you had to have supports, at least have a block that can float and be used as support, For example, a Gravity Nullifier. You can place it on the bottom of where you want your floating base to start, and build off that, and the base wouldn't fall to earth. Something like this would be acceptable, as you'd only need a support to place the block, and then you can take them all down.
That was my thought as well though I was thinking attachable repulsor type things. The problem again is that it could be very hard to program given the randomly generated gravity (maybe its just in my mind but the block shape could make it hard as well).
They could just be lazy and make it so it nullifies the effect despite the gravity, or they could make it so more of them equals floating on the heavier gravity planets.
