Well trying to make a cohesive argument, I'll say what I said in the original thread.

Not everyone wants these pets, yet at the beginning, these are given a purpose, so it's a choice between being hindered early-game by not using this pet to clutter your screen, or go without one and be behind everyone else in the game.

I shortened it because I'm in class, lol.

  3. Do you have any proof?

Because something tells me you're distorting them to make them look like good guys by saying they "disagree" only, when in reality, there are a ton of people who have been complaining and whining over such a small, mediocre, and not-really-important thing; and distorting the opposition to make them look like bad guys by saying we're desgrading those who only "disagree" by flinging poop at them..

I can certainly understand that a number of forum members were a bit underwhelmed by the revelation that Starter Pets were going to be the million dollar goal. I won't say that it is something that caters to my particular taste, however I think that given the workload they already have (and the other stretch goals) that the starter pets are completely reasonable.

Since we don't really know too much about them, the devs could really wow us with some interesting features to the system. Customization is already mentioned, which is certainly always appreciated (no one likes seeing the same dog or cat following everyone). I also really appreciate the initiative to keep the pets lore based, with each race getting a selection that is native to their homeworld...and I'm sure lore books and interesting bits of info will accompany them. Even after voting "no" in the original thread, I am looking forward to seeing how they implement the feature.

As for those that still don't care for them, that's obviously OK too. Though I think some of the hate is stemming from drawing too many conclusions about the feature. We still have no idea how interactive or useful the pets will be (Molly has already stated they don't just want a vanity pet strolling behind you). The coding and art development will surely be a fairly decent sized task for the team as is.

I also thing they probably went from the most widely acceptable goal to the one that fosters the most ambivalence. In a world where they could have predicted the success of the pre-orders, it would have made more sense to start with pets, then fossils, and finally Novakids. However I, for one, appreciate the fact that they laid one of their best hands on the table first, ensuring its success over the other stretch goals in case pre-order numbers didn't explode like they did.

All in all, I think it is a nice (and completely optional) bonus feature for those who like pets. And who knows, maybe their in-game features may sway more people into that camp. Either way it is a nice thank you from the devs for the astounding support they have already seen. There isn't really anything they have announced or shown that would give me anything but the utmost confidence in them to pull off this feature in a fun and surprising way.

I'm not a big fan of pets, and I would prefer they stay as vanity(because if they are useful then everyone will use them) but it's not something to get mad over. The game is still going to be awesome. I'll just make a rule on my server that pets aren't allowed, and I'm sure others will do the same. So I wouldn't worry. Everyone will get what they want, one way or another.

Pets are an awesome bonus feature, and they are useful.

Here's my 2 cents. I like pets but I don't think you should start with them. I like the idea of being alone at the beginning and also since pets are already in the game I feel it shouldn't be a stretch goal.

I don't like these kinds of things. I didn't like them in WoW, and I was glad to see them removed from Diablo 3 (they were in during the beta). While the Diablo 3 one served a purpose (picked up gold), they felt inappropriate for the games overall setting.

People may argue that "pets were already in Starbound", but what they can't argue is that STARTER pets were not. Starter pets are NOT "pets that were already in Starbound". These things do absolutely nothing (although this is not my main point). With normal pets, people have to go out of their way to get them, and probably even to make them useful, so not everyone will have them. Starter pets seem like they will be something everyone will just start out with. I don't care about them adding starter pets, I just don't want to experience them. I don't want to see others cutesy crap running around doing nothing just because it was something free and they use it because they can.

I didn't vote yes or no. I'm voting for the option to disable them on my end!

One thing I haven't seen anyone call attention to (in this thread) is how a large number of people seem to think that there was supposed to be some "big reveal" at the million dollar mark.

The devs made it clear that they did not anticipate this level of support at ALL, so it's safe to say a "stretch goal system" was not just waiting and ready to go. It seems to me they didn't expect to make anywhere near $1 million, or at least not so ridiculously quickly.

"1 million" is just a number. There was no mandate, hint, promise or otherwise that a million dollars would unleash anything huge. I just think it's strange, and honestly illogical, that because some people have it in their heads that "1 million" is some sort of milestone number, that we should all be rewarded with something ridiculously crazy huge and awesome. *Shrugs* it's free stuff.

If you were willing to pay 15$ for the game on it's own, why are people suddenly NOT willing to pay $15 for the game, AND a new race, AND fossils, AND starter pets? Just think about that.

Wait, hold on. I can understand having to be always online to play in single player, but what if I want to play with my friends?

  17. On the contrary, it can still be argued that it would be added post-release anyway. Same goes for Novakids and Fossils.

Don't care either way about pets, they are optional...

I can understand not wanting a pet I'm in this category but going all emo over something that's optional and probably borderline useless is absurd.
