Content isn't always what makes a game. Quality and quantity of content is a major factor; however, if a developer loses focus on the functionality of their product, as well as the community's needs, then adding content is all for naught. It's as ArmorPlated said,

Multiplayer stability needs to be improved greatly. Servers are barely functional at best, and playing multiplayer has been the main cause of several client crashes for myself, and possibly a great many others.

Servers are completely and utterly unplayable. They really need to be fixed. Please.

I'm also gonna put my support behind this. Multiplayer is the heart of this wonderful game.

Please, focus on net stability before you add any new content.

It would help if people described what was known to cause lag instead of saying "WAAH FIX IT" with no details whatsoever.

For one there is a CPU hog that seems to spike very high on generating a structure.

Yes.. When I open a google browser, I get like around 10 CPU Usage, my computer is bad... When I open starbound and google, it goes up to like 90 CPU Usage... I don't know if it is just my computer, but if it isn't please fix it!!!!

A large majority of the people protesting are simply players on the servers.

as far as we're concerned, the server crashes frequently with more than idk, 7-8 players

It's not just bad on Linux, it's bad period. CPU and memory usage spike constantly and never release. It just goes up and up until the game is unplayable. Online is a nightmare. I co-admin a server with someone who lives across the world and I can't always get a hold of him when I need a restart and there is no command to do it remotely. If there's a fresh restart and someone logs on then causes a large quantity of sand to move, the lag returns full blast. I created a moderately sized spawn and halfway through construction, it was dragging the framerate down. Add to that other players... forget about it. I used the experimental 64bit button on the launcher but I doubt that works for everyone, especially if they're on different types of systems than 64bit.

Not only that, but there's no proper server protection. The /settileprotection command is global for a planet. We need protection that can be assigned per planet at a user level, and a method for creating ranks that have specific permissions.

    /rank new visitor
/rank visitor perm build planethere false/true

    etc...

Online needs attention. It's been over a year and it's still awful. A lot of the major sections of this game that need fixing are BAD. How has it taken so long to fix the bug with rain coming through solid blocks that are off screen? How has it taken a year to add admin commands? I get that they can't optimize the current engine code because it's going to need to be reoptimized later if they do it right now, but something needs to give. The performance of the online has gotten better. Anyone who ran a server before the last stable update can explain their case to that point. It's MUCH better, sure, but we still can't protect anything nor assign user groups. That's not good. People are logging onto my server with items they got from the Creative mode mod and there's really nothing I can do because I can only protect blocks from being destroyed (sometimes, errors get fed til restart at random times) but I can't stop them from making blocks. If I ban someone, they just change their IP and make a new character because the game lacks a global account system (Example: 90% of all online games made after the year 2000). The online needs attention and it needs it now. People have been patient and laid out their stories and their examples. How much more do we need to wait before we at least get a response from Tiy or one of the head developers regarding the state of online commands, protections and server performance?

I agree with the op 100%. I know that the other operating system based servers are having problems being stable. But there is something about linux64 that absolutely makes it unplayable....Even especially after this new update. Please fix.

I definitely agree with the OP and think the developers should devote all their attention to making multiplayer more stable and reducing the number of exploits that griefers and hackers can use.
