Performance Update instead of adding new content such as combat?

The thing i hear most whilst i play Starbound is "why does a 2D platformer that lags more than a high quality game on a computer that can run Terraria and minecraft smoothly lag?". I was just wondering if their could be a performance update were things don't just lag were a REALLY GOOD 2D platformer could run as smooth as it can rather than giving the game all these overloading combat updates and such, that could potentially lag the game even more if you add physics to them. if you could answer my question that would be very nice, because i am curious as to when a performance update, that is well needed, will occur

We likely won't get much in the way of major performance improvements until the game is more feature complete. The only exception would be if the performance makes the game entirely unplayable for even high end systems. At the moment, the game still performs well enough on most systems that it's not a high priority.

This is just a straight answer and not an attack (I feel I need to say that as text does not convey context properly).
    - As this game is in the development stage, it is really, really hard to optimize. I know this is difficult for many people to understand (including myself in certain situations) as it is easy to forget they are developing the 'engine/platform' as they go. This makes it difficult to preempt performance issues off the hop; the dev team doesn't know where the game will be in 2 months. The benefit of this type of gave development is a high level of creativity, but also a sea of bugs. Optimization will come with consolidation of the engine and game mechanics. You and I are just party to a rocky time in the games Dev cycle.
-Most hardware is optimized for 3d rendering. Flat out, the graphics cards use software calls that are better suited for modern games. Modern games are designed around similar engines (unreal, havok) and this leads to a rut in the hardware development. That said, 2D is just as demanding on software and hardware as 3D. Realistically, 3D renderings are just 2D illusions of 3D.
-Running Terraria and Minecraft is not a good benchmark, but I see your point. Those games have a consolidated platform/engine to run off of. Those games did not always run as well as they do now, but I am 30, and I remember...
-Don't worry, just play something else for now if it really bothers you. You have the game in its early stages, you will still have the game when it is finalized. I can guarantee you that you wont be sick of retro style games (games are games), and you will get your moneys worth out of this one.
