    I don't know what I expected.

We all know people are going to be disappointed no matter what, some of them will be disappointed because they expected beta to be released much, much earlier, some will treat it like it's the final release and thus get disappointed and some of them will be disappointed just for the fact of being disappointed or even because of enormous, unrealistic hype.
Oh there is one group I didn't mention - trolls and jerks.

Anyway... I don't think this thread will end up anywhere good.

Well, like everyone said, there is undoubtedly going be disappointment.
In fact, I can name the betas of quite a few games that have released in the EU that have ended up in disappointment this year :(
Tends to happen when games take a while and, as humans, we naturally begin to expect more and more.

I would not trust the opinion of any Call of Duty player, playing mindless death matches over and over again isn't my cup of tea.

Oh my gosh.. I remember the days when I was a Call of Duty addict - peer pressure from friends you know? Glad I grew out of it.

I am not going to be making any friends with this thread, but I felt like saying it.
Wednesday November 20th 2013 will not live up to people's expectations.
I know that I will love the day, and am sure it will be amazing, but some people are definitely gonna be all "that's it? I shouldn't have gone to sleep, onto Thursday." The purpose of this thread is to say not to flame these people, and spark discussion.
OH YEAH WAIT! Please don't say that I haven't lived or really experienced the day yet, so I have no idea what people will think. It's a concrete fact that this much hype for this much long will equal disappointment

I just can't be excited about Starbound anymore. The game still looks cool, I can't wait to play it, but I just don't feel hyped about it in anyway, no matter how hard I try.

But I'm glad, some of the ridiculous amounts of hype some people are having can't end in any good. Most people are going to start in Progenitor stage of the beta, which won't help at all either.

Anyway, I'm also going to request this thread be locked (nicely, unlike some other people) as it's pretty much garunteed to cause a Flame War, no offense.

I learned to not get hyped for games since Fable 1. Hype feels good until release, but the end result can be... devastating.

I have put more time then I care to admit into the other X games. This is not an X game. Stear clear for now man. They may fix it enough to be playable, but the core is just broken.

This thread sure started well, didn't it?

Protip: Stop being hyped for the game. I'm waiting for it, sure, but I'm not hyping it up. I did the same thing with SSBB and I was sorely disappointed. Now, I just... wait.

If you're hyping the BETA to maximum levels, yeah, prepare to cry.

In my opinion, it would seem like your flaming because you are saying some people with high expectations will not be happy but you are not stating any concrete facts, in details, as to why they will be unhappy. Just generally stating people will regret it when beta comes out. People who fail to read are the only ones who should be upset come beta release and also those who do not comprehend the definition of "beta release" for games. I think the devs post about the phases of beta was more than enough because most devs don't even do that. Take BF4 for example. Beta looked like BF3 with bugs left and right. It's BETA. Not saying I play BF4 but I have seen it in beta and after full release, and there was a big difference between the two.

Beta is not mainly about just being able to finally play it. It's to aid the devs in making a polished product. Those who read what is posted here should know exactly what to expect, and those who fail to do so it completely on them and they can only blame themselves.

Oh and don't worry, I don't hate you OP. It's okay to debate. :)

PS: excuse any typos I have made, I woke up with a shitty cold and am about to leave for work. :-(

I'm pretty sure that most of the community here knows what they're getting into. This is not a triple A title made by a mega corporation with Hollywood actors and a gigantic advertising campaign. Most of the players here are word to mouth and most of the very loyal forum visitors know exactly what to expect from this game. People are here because they believe in this game and want to be part of something.

Every niche game seems to attract the same type of people and discussions. There's always a group of people that believe that they are the select specialists or above the norm of things. Hence these kinds of posts...

The truth is, you may be surprised by how things may turn out. However, don't be blind, if the beta is extremely bad, chances are, the release will suffer.

    • Pre-Alpha = non functional - severe design changes and core mechanics probably not working.
    • Alpha = The game should resemble or hint the final product but things are subject to drastically change. Usually, we don't calculate Alpha in terms of bugs but in terms of Mile Stones. Meaning, X critical feature are in the game.
    • Beta = The game is close enough to final release. Drastic changes will only occur if necessary but at this point, we're polishing, refining and adjusting the gameplay. Beta is a fine tuning phase. If the game is completely garbage in beta, then I'm sorry to say, chances are that things won't get any better at release. New features can be added at any time but don't expect a complete redesign of the game.
I understand what the OP wishes to express but dissing the COD fans for no apparent reason and blindly supporting a product that's not even out is silly.

Now instead of creating these kinds of post. Why not spend this time to learn on how to write a proper bug. How to clearly define the steps to reproduce and when the time comes, to be as efficient as possible. For the record, I'm a huge COD fan but I was also a huge Unreal, Quake, Doom, Wolf fan as well...
