Hi there, I just found this game yesterday and already pre-ordered because it looks so amazing! I had a suggestion that maybe has already been put up but I figured I'd give it a shot anyway. I love Terraria and Minecraft. My mom also loves both of those games. I got her into them and she absolutely fell in love. She has since stopped playing Terraria because the monsters make her too nervous and she finds it hard to play the way she wants, which is building, gathering, and exploring. now she only plays Minecraft since it has a peaceful mode where there are no monsters. I know she'd love to try this game too but there are so few games out there with "peaceful" modes. I have no idea how hard it might be to implement something like this but I know that some gamers like my mom would really appreciate it. I hope you'll consider it - Agustin

there are modes in the game, the monsters in the game seem rather pretty and cool rather than pure horror time. if it comes down to it you might be able to change it through server commands and such because the devs can already switch off what Ai's are aloud to spawn for testing and stuff so an option for friendlies might be there..
It really comes down to how big a role mobs play. In Minecraft, it can be very difficult to get certain materials (which are mostly dropped by hostile mobs) in peaceful mode. In Terraria, most mobs drop some sort of item that is of use to the player in crafting (not to mention coins). While I don't know if Starbound is taking a similar direction, I think a peaceful mode would still be a decent addition. If it's just a simple on / off option that the player can change at any time, it should suit everyone's needs (even if they toggle on a sporadic basis). Best of all, it could even get modded in if the devs don't add it.
well, monsters may be a source of meat but it wouldn't be hard to go through a run by only eating fruits and the such, money could also get ya some really good deal through the NPC markets; only problem would be the quests, you wouldn't be able to do much without them...then again if you are going for a true sandbox feel you wouldn't really need any of boss fights/quests but just build with the stuff you find.
Yeah I totally get that it makes the experience more limited, but someone like my mom, who wouldn't otherwise play the game, would love that limited experience over not having any experience at all. I still remember watching her trying to kill the slimes in Terraria... It wasn't pretty...
That's kinda what I figured with the toggle function. Turn peaceful mode off if you want to do some mob-hunting quests, and turn it back on when you finish. At least your mum plays games.
Peaceful only if it locks on character creation. The switching back and forth between peaceful and normal modes in Minecraft cheapened the experience, I believe, because it allowed you to save anything if say, a creeper was about to destroy your construction. It's important to have consequences. So, on a final note, either: Normal<->Hard Lock or Peaceful Lock options at character creation.
I don't think Starbound will be the same like Terraria in that regard. In Terraria mobs are very aggressive and constantly spawned on the left and right end of the screen. I can imagine that in Starbound the mobs won't do that as they just live in their natural enviroment. Maybe they don't want to be disturbed which is why they would attack you if you come to close but spawning them left and right doesn't seem to fit in the game at all. So all in all I think this game doesn't need a peaceful mode just because of the nature of the game, but we'll see when the game releases. I hope your awesome mom will enjoy Starbound, too.
I feel like Starbound's mobs are already peaceful comparing them to Terraria. In Terraria the only non-hostile mobs were bunnies and birds. In Starbound there is more of a chance to find peaceful mobs, and removing them all really defeats half the purpose of Starbound.
