Sad Poodle over here. I have been waiting patiently for this final wipe to come so that I can start over and no longer worry about losing my characters, ships etc.

Oh well... Just gotta wait a bit longer is all.

Will hope for the middle of the night (where I am) but count more on Friday.

you can't really though. I mean, "estimated" already heavily implies it won't be on. and the only reason there are ETAs is because people continue to ask not because they feel comfortable giving out one on their own.

I think what people are forgetting is that this patch is taking longer because of this "final wipe" stuff. It might not have been an issue if losing characters in Stage 1 of a beta had not been turned into such a big deal.

If we continue on this way, they might follow the community's lead again and just stop giving any information when they are working on patches. :p

If your estimates are literally weeks off, then the estimates are wrong. Estimates are meant to be as accurate as possible.

EDIT: I should point out, I don't actually care when it's released, or whether the devs were correct with their estimates. Just that their estimates are wrong.

"Estimates" are not perfect, and can be completely wrong.

If they are weeks off? It could be due to several reasons:
    - Illness/personal leave of key contributors
    - Expanded scope (including mods when original plan did not include any)
    - Task was a lot harder than expected
    - Task completion caused issues in nearby parts of the game
    - Estimate came from someone's nether region under great duress

    yea. as accurate as possible.

I estimate you're ENTIRELY WRONG. In all seriousness though, I would rather it not come out for a few days because I won't have time to play it. Or rather, I shouldn't.

Chucklefish has proved quite a few times that they're not very good with estimates. I'm well aware of scope creep, hell, project management is part of my degree, but that should be factored into estimations.

Which they clearly are not remotely.

Anywho, this is getting a bit hostile. To surmise, I don't have anything against Chucklefish for it, but they don't have the best record when it comes to predicting deadlines, so by now I would have expected them to compensate for that.

Says who? They're definitely as accurate as possible when you're being forced to put a date on something you had no intention of putting a date on.

    Fool me once...

In all seriousness, if they aren't great at estimating (most people I work with are horrible at it), then it seems a bit silly to expect them to suddenly become better at estimating.

  13. Elate

    Elate Spaceman Spiff

Well then why put a date on it yo?

Well no, I mean you learn from experience. If you aren't good at estimating, and keep estimating too short of a time frame, then you add onto that estimate.

I agree. They shouldn't ever give dates.

  15. Elate

    Elate Spaceman Spiff

I sort of agree, it is nice to know when an update is nearing release, but until then I think it would be a good idea to refrain from giving any dates.

if they never gave dates that would in effect do more harm than good to the player base because people would just say "ok im stopping playing till next patch"
they give a date so we have some idea of what is happening the updates prior to this were thick and fast and i would expect them to continue at a fast rate following this one

just remember this is the BIG wipe that means character and ship wipes stop and only possible world wipes giving you the ability to really start to explore the universe

"nearing release" would give an implied timeframe anyway, leading to the same issues if there are any problems or delays.

The only solution would be to clam up like other developers. I'd rather that not happen.

I think people shouldn't take the dates as estimates or whatever, rather they should take them as what the devs had in mind at the time they said it. No matter how many times they've been off, I still enjoy seeing what they think about the progress/timeline of what they're working on.

I'm guessing that they gave a date because so many people pressured them and kept asking about it. I suspect that this mass of people also doesn't work in software development, and believes that ETAs given by such people are more accurate than Microsoft Time.

Also, the first tweet said "Monday or so". Yet, the only part that people think about is the "Monday" part. They forget the "or so." They also forget that the "soon!" was given with good intentions, to try and provide information for the playerbase. At the same time, I think that the faceless crowd of people will take those good intentions, assume they are set in stone and absolutely true, and then become bitter and feel betrayed if they are not 100% accurate. Kinda sucks.

Also a pretty valid point, but I think it would lessen the impact if the timeframe weren't exact, so while you'd still have the issue, it would be lessened.

Yeah but we both know with this community that is never going to happen. Regardless of whether you or I take them as rough estimates you will always have people who throw a tantrum if it's a day later.
