    Right.

Because "don't tell me how to play, what to play, or who to play in the game I'm playing" equals saying "YOU SUCK".

    Ok...

I like how the rating and comments are disabled.

There is constructive feedback, and there is what his message warns against. 99% of the time, the chat isn't giving constructive feedback. I've watched plenty of Twitch streams, most of it is "YOU SUCK YOU MISSED THE ORB", or "#(*$#(*$! You're doing it wrong! GO LEFT YOU USELESS *&#*&#$!".

No, backseat playing is condescending and it isn't constructive -most- of the time. If you honestly believe Twitch chat rooms give constructive feedback, you're obviously watching different streams. I've watched a lot of them, trust me, what his message warns against doing isn't constructive feedback, it's annoying crap. There was a lot of it on the two livestreams last night, and I've seen it on countless others.

Edit: And yes, telling someone how to play, or what they -should- be playing, or otherwise being annoying is arrogant. The last few days Leth was -trying- to work on his own game, but the Chat kept going on about Starbound, asking him to play it every few seconds. That's annoying, it's rude, and it isn't needed. I'm fairly certain this PaperBat fellow's warning is talking about that sort of stuff.

All the steams I've seen involve the streamer and the watchers working together and they both benefit from it. All "backseat gaming" I've seen did involve the whole "you missed a box" or "ambush up ahead" but none of it has been rude or annoying. Though I haven't seen the steams you have, so I won't deny what you are saying, but to say all backseat gaming is bad just isn't true.

Let's call things what they are then, and not substitute semantics to advance an agenda.

"Backseat gaming" = acting (or trying to act) as a gamer even though you are an observer.

That's it. By itself, the term simply states a fact, and carries no negative or positive connotations, unless you are prejudiced to color it a certain way.

People can be nice when backseat gaming (e.g. offer advice, suggestions, spot out when someone missed something important, warn about a dangerous boss, suggest a strategy, etc).

People can also do all of the above in arrogant ways.

"Hey, I think you missed one of those orbs over there" <- nice backseat gaming
"The next boss has a piercing attack, remember to drink that potion!" <- nice backseat gaming

"OLOLOL U IDIOT U MISSED ORB HOW CAN U SUCK SO MUCH" <- rude backseat gaming
"u gonna be so 0wned by the next boss, at least drink pots so you dont get 1 shotted lol" <- rude backseat gaming

If a streamer wants to target the assholes without targeting the nice people, they would explicitly go after the things which make "bad" backseat gamers. So the rules would go something like:

    "Don't be rude"
    "No cursing"
"No spamming, please only point out something nice"
    "Don't spoil the story"

However, if a streamer says a blanket statement "no backseat gaming", that means one of two things:
    • They automatically think all backseat gamers are rude, without giving the nice ones a chance, and think its easier to just ban everyone as a whole.
    • They think the mere fact of backseat gaming is bad. They only want praise and never any criticism, no matter how relevant, polite, and appropriate it may be for the situation.
I hold to my opinion that neither one of the above attitudes is a good one to have for a live streamer. If you don't respect the audience (and that includes the fact that the audience may have opinions different from yours, and that they have a right to (politely) express those opinions, I don't want to be part of it.

I'm not saying it's all bad, it's just strange someone took an exception to a message declaring that "backseat gaming" is something that annoys the streamer.

There is definitely constructive criticism and helping someone in the game. I saw it on the Streams last night, but I don't consider that "backseat" gaming either.

I consider "backseat" gaming being demanding that the player do this or that, then getting annoyed when they aren't being your personal robot.

Edit: Fair enough, Gene. That's kind of the post I was wanting to see, not a facepalm picture with no explanation. Thank you.

You forgot one: They don't like to be told how to play, regardless of the tone of said instruction.

This is identical to my second point.

You are not obliged to follow every request you get. But that doesn't mean you should ban players for making such requests.

It isn't, though. Not wanting backseat gaming is not "only want praise".

Edit: also, "there are only two reasons for this" is very narrow minded. People exist in more than two types!

Apart from discussing the events of the game (which are either praise, or criticism, or some combination thereof), what else is there to discuss in a game chat that makes it different from any other chatroom?

It's a game chat, for gosh's sake. People go there to discuss the gameplay.

I already saw a bunch of what the early game is going to be like watching Leth stream the other day.
One stream is plenty enough for me.

You can discuss the gameplay without directly telling the streamer how he should be playing it.

    Yeah. It'll go something like...

"May I be far from the heathenish practice of being a backseat gamer to the contempt of the illustrious streamer, I would nevertheless like to conceptualize an abstract situation in which an abstract player would fight the boss that the streamer also happened to be fighting, using an alternative strategy to that chosen by the illustrious streamer, and as a result of which a potential advantage may be obtained by the said abstract player, which the illustrious streamer is yet to obtain".

    :yeahhhh:

This reasonable and accurate depiction of non-backseat-gaming discussion renders me completely certain that you have ever seen it occur.

I've seen enough rudeness and stupidity on Twitch... like anywhere else for that matter.

I stick to my point though: even if 90% of backseat gamers are arrogant morons, fine, ban those 90%, but do so for being arrogant morons, not for being backseat gamers. Don't target the idea just because there are those who abuse it.

I'll have to check that out, I'm not exactly a fan of TB, but I enjoy listening to him. I always enjoyed the sophisticated tone of the British accent. Plus, paired with Jesse he is quite comical at times.
