benefits of a sandbox game, you can play however you want...

You could argue that trapping those who want to do you harm in dirt boxes is a special type of cruel, so for true pacifism, you'll be dying quite often. Running away, you'll lose aggro eventually but some of the little beasts you encounter are persistent little buggers :p tunneling may be necessary.

skipping quests that involve killing - currently, to get from tier to tier requires killing a boss...so you're going to hit a dead end pretty quickly...get used to the first tier, you'll come to know it well :)

crops will be your friend for food. craft yourself a hoe, start planting. The food you get from crops and a cooking table is far superior to meat you get from mobs anyway. Banana bread will be your new fave thing! hunger + regen + speed will suit your pacifist lifestyle quite well :)

it's do-able, but extremely difficult to keep up, especially when you start hunting for blocks to build with. Most of the blocks i like are propping up pretty well guarded dungeons! so for me, building would become a massive pain. You'll be tunneling most of your in-game life i imagine...If you can manage it, much respect...5 minutes in to a pacifist lifestyle and i imagine id be frustrated enough to have slaughtered half the planets population :p

    Best of luck dude ;)

Still, key thing is that the player would only be playing a technical pacifist by out-sourcing his killing needs to other people or npcs ;)

Kind've like a Lawful Stupid paladin, or Chaotic Stupid villain; they're really playing a parody of a pacifist rather than the spirit of it. Pacifist only in so far that that kill count reads zero

the definition of pacifism is someone who opposes war and violence. Someone who outsources their violence isn't an actual pacifist...

Pacifism is oddly enough a very agresive filosophy. You fight for say peace or freedom with "peacefull" means. Basicly you refuse to make a violent move or encourage people in your movememt to do so. You will even apologise if they do and condem them for doing so. When that is said, pacifism is used to attack those who hold the power. You will refuse to support their monopolies (attack their income), tell the world that the people in power that they are opresive bullies, and encourage embargoes which would bring they poorer part of your population in trouble and might even starve some of them to death. You question powers priviledges, wich is more or less the world order as they know it and want it. All the while you do the Maradona shrug claiming that you did not do a thing, you did not throw the first stone. Then you use the powers response to paint horns and add pitchfork, sulfur and a tail. Pacifism is a means to revolt using non violent means.
Letting someone else march in and be violent is in tune with being a pacifist. Just not you or the people in your movememt, other peoples response to bullies is really just good pr: "It is shame that there are still people who will act this way, and it makes me doubt that our movememt can really win." "However we WILL be strong and prevail in a violent world that may to too young and rough for our methods." "This would never have happened if people would just listen to each other and behave with respect" etc etc.

So, the ufo just died. To make sure i had a clear signal I got on the top on one of those temples the avians use for sacrifice. I spawned the satelite dish. I am sure i remembered cheering "hi UFO, lets be friends!" But he started shooting. So I went down a level to warn the guards! they started shooting too, so i hid. Now they shot the UFO! Some people just arent ready for peacefull coexistence. As the UFO destroyed the tower brick for brick, more gaurds added and the UFO got hurt enough to spawn little ufo'es. All the guards died. Now i had been staying in range so i could suggest a peacefull solution first chance. Seeing all the guards dead i decided to warn some mobs I saw not far away. They tried to kill me! I ran back to hideout by the tower and as the small ufo'es attacked the mobs, the mobs went for the UFO! Too bad, I was just about come out of hiding because it looked so peacefull out there. Anyhow, the big UFO left behind a moltencore and i shall use this core to try to further a peacefull non violent coexistence between all races.

I couldent be bothered with taking of my armor, and i suspect i would have died twice from not being carefull enough. I never lifted a hand against that UFO. The thing is, some pacifists are willing to die for their cause, and they will definetely try again when they fail. The mobs on an alfa world can kill the UFO. Also, using another characters crafting table is not incosistent with being a pacifist. If you know for sure he obtained it by violent means feel free to try to persuade him to change his conduct and to outright condem him for being violent. Further more it might be good to confiscate his means to produce weapons and war materials.

Pacifism runs in video games where combat is a necessary part of progression classically involve tricking NPCs into killing things for you.

This being the case, a pacifism run is entirely possible. Just summon any bosses on airships, and avoid any non-boss fights.

Edit: Getting another PLAYER to do it for you isn't really gaming the system or bending the rules around your zero kill count challenge, and wouldn't be respected as a pacifist run.

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't expect that much support, v. appreciated.
I've red it all and see a pacifist approach doable except for the bosses. I will have to test how the skipping tiers works.
Youtube video sounds a nice idea, but not within my technical possibilities at the moment.
Tricking someone else or something else to do the killing would as much break the pacifism for me as using my hand to do it.

I would actually like to hear what your approach is going to be. Also the reason you wanted to know? It's possible but I somehow doubt you do this for every game?

You know when I just read the title of this thread, it reminded me of a Oxymoronic Stunt Pacifist I have seen ruling the Capital of Sarun in a Certain anime. Well him and his over confident daughter...lol

If you don't get the reference then just look up Lina Inverse....

I can definitely see it as a possiblity, as like some have mentioned, you can utilize the environment/game mechanics to your advantage to help your pacifism along... So in retrospect it is all plausible. It is just a matter of figuring out how. :D

There are plenty of NPCs willing to kick the bosses ***es for you, the pirates are probably the best at doing that. Think of it as some light RP, that your character doesn't know he is summoning bosses to kill, but rather sharing his latest creations with his/her favorite NPC type only to have things go wrong repeatedly.

    Finally, Halfbreed nails it.

Assuming you know how to make fuel and assuming you are willing to travel until you find a cluster of NPCs that can handle a boss, then there is no reason a person with knowledge that an item will summon a boss can't RP pacifist.

I want to put spoiler tags here but don't know how to on this board... so...
    SPOILERS:

Distress beacon is distress beacon. Not declaration of war beacon. Pacifist places in hopes of rescue, gets attacked, and NPCs defend.
Building a robot is innocent enough. Getting attacked by the robot and having NPCs defend does not violate pacifism.

Basically, the player can expect to get attacked because bosses are aggressive, yes, but the player's summoning actions in and of themselves do not automatically translate to acts of provocation/aggression.

Makes me wonder what setting up the scarecrow princess would amount to. "I just wanted to make a pretty scarecrow." Rats a dragon attack, better get the people to fend it off my pretty scarecrow...lol

I want to see support from the DEVs for a vegan game mode! Haha! It could be hilarious and a great lesson in caring for ALL animals :)
They could add a happiness meter and a health meter for your home planet and character as a game mechanic to replace fighting!

    I will say this.
Pacifism can also mean that you do not fight unless your life is threatened. (Which in this game is a lot)

    TheSilverKnight,
My approach is going to be "going through the game without killing anything"
Why i wanted a pacifist run is difficult to answer, the short version would be: because i dont like killing other creatures.
If you need to know more send me a personal message.
    --------------------------------

Regarding what pacifism is, and what it is not, its better to make a new separate topic in "off topic " section
Anyone willing to share their pacifism definition please go there.

I never actually thought of that...technically i think you could make it to tier 3 playing as a pacifist (assuming your character can cope with being responsible for several deaths at multiple villages) shouting good intentions and 'woops' all the way...

i think the decoy princess is a bit too blatant to go any further without it being deliberately violent though :p

    The Mute One Phantasmal Quasar

The Distress Beacon is a call for help, not a declaration of war. The pacifist wouldn't like other NPCs defending them, and they'd try to convince both sides to stop fighting, but they can't stop it.

The Inactive Robot is fine, kind of. It's impossible to get a Superior Brain without killing, but if you do summon it, you can say you just wanted a buddy but it turned against you. It's not really alive, anyway, so it's fine to destroy your own, inanimate creation.

The Decoy Princess is a bit.. blatantly violent. What can you say about it? You wanted to hitch a ride on the Bone Dragon?

I suppose the Peanut Butter trap was just the pacifist trying to make another friend, but with a less robotic method. And failing.

To me it's like saying "can I play Starbound as an agoraphobic who is also keenly against space travel?"

I think what you are referring to is " Nonviolence " instead of Pacifism; which is an unconditional rejection of all forms of warfare. Nonviolence tries to avoid all violence unless absolutely necessary for self-defense. Pacifism and even nonviolence can be Non-aggression, but even then it allows for self defense. So with that said...

    1. You can completely avoid killing animals and humanoids (bosses don't count, they are a UFO, a Killer Robot, A skeletal dragon abomination, and a killer eyeball alien.) upon calling any of these they attack you immediately, and thus you defending yourself is completely within the realm of pacifism. (I would LOVE for there to be an option to discuss with them prior to fight and possibly do a quest for them for the item needed, such as maybe find fuel for penguins, find new wires for the robot to repair itself, rescue the dragons egg from a dungeon, or even that peanut butter loving eyeball elder god thing might like more peanut butter or something good to eat (maybe... Pussplums? ewww)

    2. Block their view of you and they will leave you be, get bubble/butterfly/ gravity tech to fly over critters.

    3. No quests involve Killing anything currently, the last quest is to make contact at the moment.

    4. Farming, Once you get the right seeds this is a FAST way to make really filling food, much better than hunting knife/bow and cooking meat.

Well, there is the quest to obtain and cook alien meat.
