    1) No.

Being a pacifist will prove hard. Try hanging around towns for meat, the guards will kill mobs and leave the loot on the ground. You also find meat in vilage containers like bookshelfs..???? and chests and what not.
To run fast try cake/pizzas basicly any more complex crafted food. The gravity bubble tech is also a great help in avoiding fights since it lets you rise into the air and fly till your energy runs out. Up/down distance combined with left or right seems to be the easiest way to loose agro. A crack in the ground is great to loose birds, getting on a mountain is good for ground mobs. Ground mobs will tend to get stuck in the scenery, they run right/left first, then try to get up to you. Any overhang between you will stop them.

You may play this game without killing anything, but you won't go past tier 1 :)
Except if you don't count UFOs, robots and dragons as animals/humans.
For pacifying animals there is a way to capture animals, but only below 50% health, so you have to hurt them.
And for the food you could just grow crops and start cooking meatless meals...

    1. I see this only viable on a multiplayer server..

    2. They won't target you if they are unable to reach and see you after a while.. For example: They will "forget" you are hiding in a dirt box after 5-10 seconds.. That is until they see you again..

    3. Technically you could if you know how the game works beforehand.. For example: You know how to make a Distress Beacon despite being on the cooking meat quest, so you make the beacon and progress to Beta sector while still on cooking quest..

    4. Use the Force seeds you found during your first quest (AKA Ship Locker where you got Matter Manipulator) and some dirt.. A stone hoe is also required to till the dirt so you can plant the seeds..

Wouldn't it be possible to mod the game so you can find the tier chars located in special chests, and each tier chart is only able found in a certain sector?

If you wanted to play full pacifist you can not progress past tier one. You can avoid animals and enemies but there is no current method to pacify them.

You can however get food through farming and purchasing it from vendors in towns.

I can see starbound being awesome for RP in a multiplayer situation.

However even a pacifist will defend themselves in mist situations. Heck even the Dali Lama said this "If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun."

The Hylotol a race in starbound are pacifists however will defend themselves or protect those who can't defend themselves.

I don´t understand that answer at all, sorry.

    1. It is possible. But you can´t advance to higher tiers. But that would be easy to mod.
    2. Run or build stuff around them.
    3. Not now, but also easy to mod.
    4. I don´t know why everyone say NO here, sure you can get food without meat from hunting.
    - You can buy food from several merchants
    - You can grow your own farm
    - You can find food in chests

    Good luck playing as pacifist.

    Greetings Aethilion.

    EDIT:
I took a look in the mod section for you and found:

    Skipping Tiers :

    Stealth, Decoy Teleport mod :

These mods should help you to advance in tiers and avoid fights as well.

Without mods, it's impossible to get past tier 1 (as the drop that lets you is from killing a boss). You can get past monsters (though it's difficult and annoying), and you can grow your own food (you start with seeds).

Being that the game is pretty easily moddable, I'd suggest heading to the mod section and checking out some of the mods there. I'm not sure if there will be any outright pacifist mods, but maybe a compilation can help ease some troubles with the playstyle.

I have to say, I respect your decision to play the game according to your beliefs, but this game is designed such that you won't be able to progress without killing. And since it's still in early beta, there really isn't anything else to do in this game other than progressing. Exploration being the exception of course. Exploration would certainly be interesting if you challenged yourself to enclose enemies with block placement without killing them.

If you do a pacifist run, do a playthrough on youtube. That'd be highly entertaining :D

    1. You can play the game as a pacifist except against bosses.

    2. To avoid animals - that is what your handy dandy matter manipulator is for. Place Dirt around the animal creating a cage so they can't attack you.

    3. Farm Food - you start with wheat in your space ship.

    4. Get money by exploring underground and breaking capsules to buy more food and items.

Why do people keep saying #1 is impossible to do past tier 1? It is entirely possible! Like I said earlier, it is possible on a multiplayer server.. Just get someone else to kill things for you.. After all, the OP is the pacifist.. It does not mean everyone else around him also is one.. Also, it was never stated that they will be doing strictly single player.. For all we know, he could be planning to make a pacifist character for some RP on a multiplayer server, but wanted to see if it were possible to do so before committing to building up such a character..

I would imagine that if he is dedicated to being a pacifist and not eating meat, that he would be against someone doing it for him or giving him items that came about from non-pacifism. That's why even in the real world there are products that are listed as cruelty free or not containing animal byproduct. Because someone of those ideals doesn't want anything to do with the opposite.

As i said above I am of the mindset that someone can be a pacifist and still defend themselves or others. Try and attack a Buddhist temple and I guarantee any of the martially trained monks will kick your ass to defend their friends.

That is akin to some one ordering a hit man to kill some body and saying they are not guilty of murder.

You certainly put it much more simply than I and a more effective argument at that. Bravo.

There are many hypocrites out there.. I could begin listing examples, but it would result in a flame war and warnings for everyone involved..
Guilty by association is akin to knowing a guy who did something wrong, which in turn means you are guilty of the same thing they did wrong simply because you know of them.. This logic is flawed..
    ......
Wait a sec.. Since I know of someone who has flawed logic, that must mean mine must be flawed too! There is only one way I can be right here....
    ......
    WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE?!

Seriously though.. Just because you tell someone to do something it doesn't mean you did it yourself.. Not to mention that they still have the choice to not do what they were told.. On top of that, success of the action being performed is not guaranteed..

    In a less extreme circumstance:

I tell someone to build me a house..
They built a barely standing structure that vaguely resembles a house..
    Did I build that house?

I really want to pick this apart but it's honestly not worth it. In pointing out the flaws of xxswatelitexx's logic you pointed out the flaws in your own. I'll just say generalizations are bad.

    You actually changed my statement.
I didn't say you know some one who committed murder.
I said you ordered the murder to happen.

Another words - since you are unwilling to kill the first boss. You have some one do it for you.

In the U.S you are charged with murder even though you did not commit it. Or attempted murder - if the hit man fails.

Another words my logic is perfectly sound.
Your failure of understanding on the other hand.. cannot be remedied.
