What kinds of dev blogs do you like? What do you want to see more / less of?

The poll is generally pretty generic, and includes four different questions that overlap somewhat.

Please also leave a response if you have any unique opinions or thoughts.

    I'm sure this has been discussed to death, but in light of the slightly widened gap (2x per week instead of 3x per week) in days between posts since the break (5, 2, 6, 2, 17, 3, 2, 2, 3, 0, 3, 2, 2, 1, 4, 3, 3, 2, 1, 4, 2 . . .) I feel it might be worth asking again.

Obviously that was a very minor point of analysis, and I could go into the spread of characteristics within posts as well as which posters have been more active lately and what kind of content they tend to post. And then it depends on where in the development cycle they are, since right before a major update they could be focusing on work and less on maintaining the blog...

(From my post below): Personally the blogs that I like to see are those that go behind the scenes. In depth blogs about infrastructural details and the development of the game's systems. Those give us insight into details not really present or noticeable when playing the game, as well as keeping us more up to date with what's actually going on in the development process in a way that new weapons, monsters, and dungeons do not. However, those are also the blogs that take the longest to write, so it is understandable why they would be so much less frequent. That is why I also like the little blogs that just mention briefly what different people have been working on.

  2. Honestly I don't much like the dev blogs at all. Sure, I enjoy 1 every now and again -- and I understand they are necessary due to the circumstances that created a large development cycle between patches.

But I feel as though Dev Blogs in too much frequency spoil the hype and otherwise warp people's expectations of both content and development.

In that case, perhaps you would like wordier blogs as opposed to picture-ful blogs, since pictures naturally act to spoil things (unless they are like the awesome cave generation blog which had many pictures); less frequent longer in depth posts, which tend to be more about the development process and less about hype and content; posts just mentioning what people are working on, so we can kind of follow their progress without artificial expectations; and posts more about infrastructure and systems development, which may give a less distorted view of the development process.

  4. Actually I would have preferred 1 blog post per month of whatever content. So long as it was still minimal.

There's also the type of posts that occasionally seem like they were just posted because Tiy yelled at them to get one posted before the end of the day.

I like the dev blog, when It's something more than just a sneak peak or a teaser because they are interacting with us and that's what makes the dev's different to most. I like it when they let us know how It's going and what part they are working on. I wouldn't mind though if they changed the dev blog to be something less frequent so long as they include a road map that gets updated like once a week or so, that way we would be able to still see what is being worked on and leaving them time to continue working and not being forced to make a post when they might not have anything new to talk about.

I'd like to see more technical blogs about problems they had, and how they solved them.. Mockups or screenshots don't do it for me. I like to hear about the techie stuff.

Even though I don't understand a lot of it, it's interesting to read about the nitty gritty of game design.

So I'll vote for "infrastructure" stuff.

I like those, even though I too don't understand like... ALL of it... but I can totally understand why we don't see those so often, and not because of people not "getting" it.

Man, those have GOT to take forever to write down into something cohesive even for the code monkeys out there. And I'd imagine the code team is easily THE most busy of the company at... well, all times, really.

Yeah the road map would be great! I forgot about it. I had a neat interface.

They could completely change their news format into a 2 \ 3 day cycle. With each alternate week mixing things up allowing more time for development.

    Something along the lines of

    Week 1.
    • Tuesday - Art Teaser (Audio \ Image \ Concept Art \ Writing \ Random Workstation Record \ Taco Night )
    • Thursday - Special - Anything Goes

    Week 2
    • Monday - Question of the Week - Community asks questions every Wednesday - thread locked next day. Dev's reply to their choice of questions the following Wednesday. People vote for popular questions they want to see answers to - since 7 day gap is there. Gives then more than enough time to answer 2 - 3 questions a week.
    • Wednesday - Replies to Last Week question of the Week
    • Friday - Community Highlight - Something in the community related to Starbound gets highlighted.

    Week 3
    • Tuesday - Art Teaser
    • Thursday - Special - Anything Goes

    Week 4
    • Monday - Question of the Week -
    • Wednesday - Replies to Last week Question of the Week.
    • Friday - Every 2nd Friday is a summary of last 2 weeks + plans for the next 2 weeks

Something along the lines where they dont feel pressured to constantly have to give development based news when none is currently available. So replacing it with similarly related things.
