Okay, so, I made this thread for people to post their opinions about the new game update. Yeah, it includes permanent death mode, memory leak fixes, and so on. You guys can post your opinion about the new update's features, performance, blah blah blah. Okay, here goes mine:
When I turned Steam on today, I saw that my Starbound was getting an update. After the update finished, I read in the changelog that it would be getting memory leak fixes, new permadeath mode, etc. I opened Starbound and made a new character in permadeath mode to check how it feels. When I was in my spaceship, I moved around, and the textures and objects of the ship were like blinking, causing me some lag. I stood still for some moments and it wasn't blinking anymore, so I beamed down.
The same thing happened. The trees, mobs, player textures were blinking, causing lag too. I did the same thing, stood still, and they didn't blink. As soon as I started moving again, they were blinking.
So, in my opinion, performance in-game has worsened a lot, not in FPS, but in lagspikes.
Before the update, I played Starbound in, like, 30-50 FPS, but now, this game's completely unenjoyable.
Just look at the most badass computers around. Toshiba Satellite, Qosmio, Razer Blade Pro...they are all getting the same issue as me, and I'm in an old laptop.

I have also some performance issues but not gamebreaking bad. Some lag when I get to villages and such. This needs definitely a fix.

In addition I would suggest that you edit the voting. This should be a thread about the opinon of the new patch so "I like it", "I like it in general but I have some new/old issues", "I hate it with every fiber of my body" and so on.
This shouldn't be a comparsion between terraria and SB. We have had enough of those.

yea why is the poll about Terraria? I tried Terraria, I thought it was rather lame, attacking, and over all controls of the game felt limited, and clunky. Even in Beta where the game barely runs for me in places Starbound feels more polished and is a larger much deeper game. I personally would compare starbound more to minecraft, having a more open and expansive limitless game would.

Starbound just looks a bit like Terraria due to both having a 2d side scrolling game area, and you can mine things other than that, for me at least, they are totally different games altogether.

My computer at this point is 1 year old. I am running win 8.1, I have 8 gig of ram. There should be no reason why a 2d game should lag at all other than the developers have not figured out that yes, resources need to be managed. I should not have to have last month's alienware uber box to play this game. Seriously, as of last patch, I could still play this game on the maximum resolution without a single hang and still have enough to where I could design a house full of goodies without a single problem, now, I can't even play on the lowest resolution without it stuttering when I walk in to a dungeon. It's ridiculous.

YOu can't have this sort of thing in a game where part of the fun is traipsing around the universe picking up goodies to take back to the home planet and display your ill gotten gains all over the landscape. claiming that the lag is the fault of people with low end computers is a cop out of major proportions. Sometimes, yes, it's because you're still running that special from '06 with winxp and the only way to get it to load at all is by using openGL, but sometimes, and this is definitely the case here, it is the developer that needs to back off and realize that unlike the worlds they are creating, our resources are not infinite.

I'm not sure why, but I don't have the blinking effect or lag. Running on my desktop computer. Specs:

    i5 3330
    8GB 1333mz RAM
    Samsung 840 SSD
    Nvidia GTX 550 Ti

i think the patch shows that this game is very much beta, and not an unfinished "alpha" like some people wishfully think. I doubt we get too many substantial changes to core game besides quest.

    Win7 x64

I have no lag whatsoever. My system is fairly up to date, processor a couple years old. I've seen other Win8 users with issues. Have you tried to launch with DirectX & OpenGL? I think others have tweaked multicore settings to eliminate it.

EDIT: There's also another patch that just came down, I think it's a hotfix for stuttering and possibly Mac issue.

I put the voting comparing Terraria and Starbound because Terraria also has had a beta stage. In my opinion, I felt more comfortable playing Terraria's beta stage than Starbound's. Remember, guys: This is my opinion, and you gotta respect it as well as I will respect yours.

Running smooth as a babies bottom on my laptop and pc. Hope it will be fixed soon for others.

I love this game and literally get lost in it.

I do wonder why people are on these forums if they are bored with it though. Maybe go and do something you do like.

I was not being disrespectful but, just do not see the need to compare the 2 they are different styled games and the development cycles are run differently. Even the term "beta" means different. Starbound is really early in development and could almost be considered an alpha. They have a lot of features still not implemented to the point the game will be quite a bit different went finished.

As for your original topic, I too, had major slow downs but after the hotfix went up a couple hours ago it seems to be a lot smoother. You should try again and see if you get a boost as well :)

Personally on art style and movement alone I like starbound. I have seen people before say it looks excactly like terreria but my guess is they don't see sprite art that often. The humans are bigger instead of short children like in terreria. I know it's the same art guy but he has improved in my opinion as shown in terreria. Also love the freedom of movement and not having to jump over one high blocks.

All in all it's a good update. I've experienced a few screen-freezing lag spikes about every 30 minutes or so, but it doesn't really disrupt the game. It's just a minor annoyance. The balance adjustments and new creature abilities make fighting more fun, but NPC's could be improved. The additional mini-dungeons and apparent dungeon tweaks are appreciated.

I find that the game does load up quicker than it did before, though now I have to run in open gl mode so that I don't get massive lag spikes (when before I could use the normal mode). That being said, I find the newer mob attacks to be rather interesting looking, granted one of those attacks is worthless as it requires you to take fall damage, and as it is now you can't really die from fall damage unless you fall from a really high place.

One question I do have though, did they lower weapon drop rates in the game? I haven't been able to find any drops from enemies in dungeons, an have only found like 3 from chests.

For me, the performance is the same as before (after the hotfix. There was some unbearable stuttering immediately after the first patch). That said, the performance is pretty bad and I get low framerates on average. Before the patch, I couldn't enter some dungeons without FPS going straight to hell, but I haven't found one yet to test since the update.

I just hope the performance issues are going to be tackled sooner rather than later, since it's not enjoyable to play in slow-mo mode.

Until performance is improved, all I can say is "Feels beta man". 'Cause that's what it feels like, being in beta.

since this post was made before the 2nd update today... I have to agree that it was choppy, but since I got the second one, it went back to what it was before the update. Well at least for me. It loads up about the same now and runs smoothly for the most part. I can finally play, which I did for a couple hours to do a few things. Probably get back to it later, but figured I would look around here for a bit. :D
