Opinion: What's missing in Starbound

    Hello everyone!
I don't even think I've posted this in the right forum, but I'll just start:

Each time I play Starbound, I think about Terraria. I don't know if this is wrong, thinking about Terraria when actually playing Starbound that might be seen as something completely different, but I still do each and every time. Even though Terraria has an ending or endgear with just one world, it seems to movtivate me much more than Starbound and I'm trying to find out why. Things that come to my mind when I think about Terraria are mostly running around in the dungeon(s), making hellevators or huge water / lava generators, defending your house with traps against zombies and goblins, fighting stupid-looking bosses, finding nice looking armor and the monsters with their specific model like zombies and especially the weird-looking monsters like Unicorns or flying eyeballs.

I don't know how and why, but I feel like Starbound's most characteristic and special features are the ones that I don't like. I never stay on one planet, instead once all the resource on the planet's surface are gone, I hop into my spaceship and go to the next planet and do the same there. No matter how hard I try, if I build myself a house or try to make myself a cool garden, each time I start playing, I find myself flying around in space.

What do you think? Do you have any tips on how to get me to play longer?

Don't forget that this is not at all a complaint, these are also no suggestions - this is my personal opinion on Starbound and I'm sure as hell gonna try to find a way to get this game more interesting for me!
Looking at the Dev Blog, keep up the good work!

Keybind GUI that works with nightly build and doesn't need to be redone as often.

    Underground music

    No pineapple pizzas in game

    No My little Pony race

The last one is a lie. That would make the game worse.

More reflex and strategy based combat. - being added.
Better cave generation so that finding a cave system that goes all the way down isn't that hard. - being added.
Monster bodyparts being affected by their environment and actually having unique functions like adding jump height, etc. - being added.

    Welp, nevermind!

More refined difficulty options. Not just "How do you want to be punished when, and I mean when, you die?". The game could really benefit from options that actually have an effect on how easy or hard the game is (mob difficulty, resource distribution, leveling, etc.). Maybe additional tick-boxes for things like hunger and permadeath.

See, you and I, we're buddies, we ultimately have the same concerns at heart. You're Jensen and I'm Pritchard.

Yeah, the overabundance of mandatory, tacked on difficulty crap is making me more hesitant to come back to the game. Is it okay with you if I link the Extra Credits video detailing the difference between punishing games and difficult games?

A Weapon System that actually gives advantages and disadvantages

Guns still use energy, guns are obviously ranged and in melee you wont use them (except maybe the flamethrowers) - still, using a gun removes your mobility (techs) since they use the same energy.
In the melee section then, there are weapons that behave very similar to guns (the spears), you can aim with them, they have a long range, some of them can even shoot like a gun...with the difference that they dont use energy and can pierce enemies...
Then comes the melee-combat overhaul, where you will be able to parry with 2H weapons...
So i dont have a real reason to use a gun in the latest nightly, because i have way more survivability, damage, versatility and mobility than i have with a ranged...while ranged combat is normally meant to be the mobile "i wont get hit" combat style.

The rest of the gun types for Novakid to craft

as long as the scaling is balanced, i would not care if i could carry a grenadelauncher from the beginning. Its sandbox, isnt it?
even if you would neet to unlock them first through quests or something like that...but atleast give them the same amount of choice that the other races have.
If i want to be a mad bomber...give me the options to do that.
If i want to be a pyromaniac...why not?
Other races have the freedom of choice for melee...do i want to carry a heavy hammer? use directional spear attacks? dualwield daggers? or go the classic sword & shield combo?
A limitation to pistol and sniper rifle is just boring...
But Novakid is not finished...so i hope they will do something like that :)

    Planet Bookmarking

As mentioned above, bookmarking a planet would be handy.

    Planet Scanner

Digging might be fun for a while...but if you cant find a fancy special cave it turns boring pretty fast.
A short-ranged scanner to scan for these special things (like scan for objects nearby) would be handy.
    Maybe with the Fossile system?

Rewards for building a house with more expensive materials and furniture

Like better healing beds, walls with better heat isolation (if the temperature system is coming back)

A Dream for the endgame: create your own solar system

Wouldnt it be awesome if you could create your own sun with your own random generated planets? Or wipe them out when you dont like them anymore?

    I like these ideas.

I would also like to see the creature capturing system expanded on. like maybe being able to combine the aspects of creatures to create new species (For end game). This might work well with being able to create solar systems.

So...LERROOYYY JJJEERRKKKIINNN:sparta::confirm:, then you find it fun afterward. so pretty much starbound basicly fun stuff which I still do have fun, but can't wait for build update any longer! note show front forum of the home page for all infomations fulfilled. So celeabtration . So yea...I wish it is about to be finish about now before christmas come, so I can be thankful on thanks giving.:3:nod:

agree to your terms. dark souls is really flipping fun when discovering other ways to do and plain though. every games should be complex, not punishment. Anyway off the side topic we will stick back topic.

I agree with what Jonesy mentioned of the difficulty. It would be nice for it to mean more than it is now. I mean their could be an advanced options button that could open up a window for some customization. Seen this done in Gnomoria, kind of. Except that game it is pretty much a kingdom management game, and most the options are for danger/resources and map setup.

What I had in mind was a few or several check boxes for certain things, like optional stuff and a radial selection for difficult setting. There could be a lot in that advanced window, within reason. One step at a time, for now I can actually play it as is. Whether this will be a thing or not wouldn't bother me either way, it just would be nice to have.

My main thing I think is missing they have notion to put it in at some point. Makes me wonder how they will go about it, and what it will consist of. :)

More depth with the guard and npc spawners, perhaps a way to make them follow certain orders like guarding an area, following you, or even utility based things such as collecting or transporting resources for you.

Support-style guns, like a healing ray or a nade launcher that shoots stimpak buffs

    Diplomacy and a karma system

Oh, and also random events on a large scale, like two different races/factions having a war, that would spice up exploration a bit.
