If I am correct it is just different Operating system in how they interact with files and the like. Really I think dx is for windows and opengl is for everything else. Unsure. Depends on the system as a whole those, as some windows specs work better with one or the other. It is more of an alternative to use. One will work more effectively than the other. dx I believe is native to windows as I mentioned. opengl is more open to various systems in using, more modular I guess.

I am probably not the best to ask, as I just know one sometimes works better than the other in certain instances and vise versa in some other instances.

Well here's my system for some help...

    Vista 64-bit Home Premium
    4x 2gig sticks of DDR2 ram
    Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.oo GHz
    EVGA GTX 560ti 1gb

    run a server through tunngle
    run starbound windowed
use 2 monitors (1920x1080 primary screen, 180x1024 secondary one for IM chat and browser etc)

Maybe that can help with suggestions for me but a list of pros and cons for running each (DX or GL) on Starbound would be really helpful to have explained.

If you are using Windows Dx is usually always the best option.
If you are using any other operating system Dx is not an option.

Ironically, running on Windows7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1, the 64-bit OpenGL has so far been the smoothest experience for me.
    Right after the hotfix hit, I saw the DX 64bit button and was all "Ooo.", tried it for 15min and noticed that my game was lagging to shit in an Avian Tomb, and switched back to OpenGL. Haven't had any issues since. ^^;

You should report that in billing and support.
It means there is an issue if that is the case.

Didn't think to because I figured my system might just be set up weird, but if you think it'll help, I'll go pitch in there. Thanks :)

I tested it and the same for me... direct x runs so laggy for me in 64 bit mode.

I think directx version of starbound is better than opengl ones, cuz the new update 1.0 didn't allow me to play it and it requires Opengl 2.0. My computer only works with opengl 1.4 wich supports directx version and runs fine, I wish they add the directx version back.

    Sorry for bad english...
