One word : Zombies !!

zombies are awesome but how would they get to other planets they don't have space ships

Personally, yes, zombies are overused. However, I feel that a way to make it work would be to insert them through the procedural generation module. I'd rather have a mostly living being with a super strong zombified limb than a full on rotting corpse. That being said, a lot of the creatures here aren't from any other game... so why would zombies be limited to just being humanoid? Like above, i support the idea of zombie penguins. There doesn't even have to be a need to have the zombie virus spread, either. I think that the virus would be better spread through you choosing to do so than automatically.
That being said... limited to being full, human zombies? i'd say no. procedurally made zombies? heck, why not?

 

As for concerns of a "Zombie's could only be on one planet" variety, this could be fixed in a rather simple way. Now for a twist on zombie origin, maybe there is a certain planet for zombies, however, there is also valuable plant life present here. So you go around and bring some of the plant samples back to your ship, but this plant was responsible for the initial zombie outbreak due to it's spores. And you go from there heheh.

where did we even get the idea that zombies were a virus....... oh well. maybe there should be good zombies

Rather than actual creatures, I think zombie should be some kind of prefix; a zombie creature cannot be healed, and will always attempt to kill anything without a zombie prefix. They heal through killing/attacking creatures ';..;'

 

Yeah that could be interesting, too.
Even more so if they could infect others... Zombie outbreak!

 

I smell a great mod idea sir, I have already supported Alvin on this.
I think a zombie MOD or GAME MODE would be pretty legit, especially if it has a big challenge on it.
