Gotta agree with other above, I think we've got enough zombies elsewhere. They're a bit cliche now, yes? Or perhaps that is just a hipster view. "Man, i liked zombies when they were still underground."

Anyways, you can have mindless assailants that refuse to die without them being the walking dead. Space madness, nanotech/ai gone awry, infections, bioengineered goocreatures that reform as they are attacked... really, we could get really creative on this and have it be zombie-like without it being so obviously zombie.

    Cheers,
    ~Chitte

Not to mention that Starbound is rather whimsical and rotting dead doesn't fit it.

At this point the question of "what kind of zombies" should be asked. I'm thinking the only thing that would fit are the spore carrier creatures from Fallout, its not a flesh eating zombie but it is an animate corpse with reasons to kill you. This could also be done with machines, which would give them electric based damage bonus.
Having your left 4 dead rabid humans or the slow limping arm flailers isn't going to work at all. The only place I could imagine them coming in at that are other space research stations (not repairable like the one you turn into your base) Which would work like dungeons orbiting around very few planets. Dead space 2D in a way.

Also my two examples of zombies SHOULD be too evil for the player to be able to try and capture/train them. Making them enemies and LOCKED as enemies.

EDIT: another idea are large parasite based zombies, like Halflife's head crabs.

No please, no more undead standar enemy, is a Sci-Fi one, fit better creatures like Zerg , Tyranids or "Bugs" from starship troopers fast and deadly! :D

People seem to have an obsession with killing other people under the pretext that it's ok because they don't act human.

Has anybody thought about just using gun totting Cyber zombies? Hell they're still zombies just smarter.

I think a derelict space station kind of like in one of the mass effect levels or dead space style with parasites or even a thing like the huge monster in resident evil(cant think of the name)

Zombies just don't belong in such a game.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some sort of zombie planet. :)
Especially if it has zombified penguins.

Unless they're nanomechanicaly controlled. you could throw down a scenario involving a city on top of a ancient piece of alien technology, some folks die near by, they become not so dead due to the Alien technology, then they all get taken over by some alien supercomputer and used as drones for the most part. Its like having your zombie and eating your sci-fi too. The Zombies could be wielding rather powerful weapons due to their access to some advanced alien technology. hell you could have factions of Nano-tech zombies some for rebuilding the Alien Technology responsible for their Resurrection and another group of Cyber-zombies trying to keep themselves quarantined. I'd love to run in to a civilization of zombies, that functioned as such.

well you could be talkling about a tyrant, about nemesis (which is to be honest a special anti S.T.A.R. Tyrant),or any other big B.O.W like T.A.L.O.S. ...

if you ask me the best way of implementing zombie like creatures would be robots or an infection that makes the monsters tougher (more HP,Attack and so on)
thinking about the possibilitie of quests from the planets natives you could have to search a cure for the infection and until you find it you'll run into those stronger versions and maybe even virus mutated versions of some of them

That's irrelevant. Any developer can summon any amount of technobabble for why zombies exist. The simple fact of the matter however is that they do not fit the tone.

Zombies can fit pretty much any setting if done well.

Minecraft's zombies are blocky green dudes that mindlessly chase you around:

...And the Plants vs Zombies zombies are dull witted and hilarious. :)

Starbound has humanoid birds with boobies, hobos with cardboard boxes on their heads, penguins with crowns, planets covered in tentacles, ape men and who knows what.
I find it hard to believe that zombies couldn't be made to fit in Starbound.

They could even be zombified versions of existing monsters.
Zombie space hobos?! Or maybe zombie penguins? (Maybe your brains smells like fish to them...)

i was thinking like fast and numerous zombies but not very tough kind of like l4d you know what i mean or yeah monsters like nemesis or just a parastie that takes over the mind and leaves the body intact so you could be facing off against armed gunmen security guards or something liek that.

Them being in a game doesn't really mean that they should be in every game. Starbound is much more abstract in how the creatures look and act so why add something so overdone, cliche, and boring?

Well you've got your opinion and I've got mine. :)
I've always loved undead creatures of all sorts and I don't think that there's ever enough!
My avatar probably hints to it pretty well!

In fact I'm hoping that there'll eventually be a planet type on which all creatures are zombified or skeletons.
If not then maybe somebody will mod one in.

I was more going for hyper hostile gunman, that happen to be undead. kinda getting tired of mindless zombies myself and rather see something more akin to a smart bullet sponge that shoots back.
