Why not just have the name Terraria style but an overall identifier like in Guild Wars 2?

My sniper char could be named: "Gorkyman"
My heavy char could be named: "Spacechippy"
My explorer char would be : "MashedMush"

And when you add any of those characters to your friends list, you'd see my identifier with my active char next to it ala: *sammanzhi:134*, Spacechippy.

This way you can keep in touch and know what character I'm active on at the moment.

    Needs to be like Steam.

In Terraria it was like this:
    make a new character
    griefs server
    gets banned
    make a new character
    griefs server
    get banned
    repeat x100

I hope that doesn't happen, thats what killed the experience of Terraria and public servers.
It would be even worse in starbound.

If it was like steam, there would be almost no problems with that crap.
    Grief
    Get banned
needs to buy the game again/make a whole new account with a different email to grief again

    Terraria local-data method.
Steam names will have to be Steam-version only, for obvious reasons, but apart from that...I really don't see any reason to make the system more complicated than it needs to be.

I'm still waiting to see what Chucklefish is doing in regards to the server code anyway. If user data is kept on a key-system, relative to each server, it could prevent the issues described. (or via IP filtering; in my experience, it takes more effort to spoof an IP for an individual application than most asshole griefers are willing to commit)

  5. There isn't ANY kind of DRM in Starbound. There will be a master-server only used mainly for guarantee when we server owner bans someone, it stays banned! It can ban our Key of the game, your Account, etc...

Any other kind of DRM is confirmed to be not in the game, but there is still, security enough. ;)

yeah, when I bought Minecraft I didn't realize my account would be my name forever. I really regret it since I picked a stupid name since I figured it would just be a placeholder.

VAC doesn't ban for griefing, it bans for cheating. I also seriously doubt Starbound will be VAC enabled.

    Better solutions:
    IP ban.
    Use a whitelist.
    Use hamachi.

There's no possible way you could implement a system to detect griefing, which would mean the devs would have to manually ban people. Using that system, the devs would need crazy amounts of evidence, lest they accidently dick over an innocent person. And to follow that up, it's not entirely beyond the realm of possibility for someone to create fake evidence using photoshop/video editing software.

No, I wasn't talking about VAC. I was talking about how Steam has accounts, so if your Steam ID was banned on that server by one of the mods, you would have to make a new account to get on it again.

I see, but then you have the issue where you either force people to go through a login server (which may or may not be down, especially at launch), or let people play offline but prohibit them from joining servers.

Chucklefish is already working on having accounts for the game held on their servers. These account names will be unique, much like the forum accounts. Then you can have any number of characters with names that don't have to be unique, tied to that account.

For example someone registers with the username TiyTheOverlord. No one else would be able to register an account with that username after it's been registered.

But if PlayerA creates a character named TiyTheOverlord
PlayerB can from their own account have a character with the same name and still play on the same server as PlayerA

Server owners/admins may enforce no duplicate character names as a rule to avoid confusion, therefore it would be a good idea if you can edit your character name post creation(in fact I'm going to pop this bit into the suggestion box)

Server owners/admins would then be able to recognize individual users by their account name(and possibly CD key) if any issues occur(i.e. griefing).

Steam is DRM. Also, didn't bartwe post something about possible online authentication a few days ago?

  16. Spottycat

    Spottycat Scruffy Nerf-Herder

Character name with optional toggle for account names to be displayed in chat and /who along with names of characters for public or admin only depending on server settings.

  17. FrozenFlame

    FrozenFlame Giant Laser Beams

It should be both, seeing account details shows your actual account handle. (Which I hope is the Forum handle)

  18. Not authentication, yes a possible account system to activate your copy online, it won't force you by any form being online or login, if It is... likely to be a simple way to link your game copy to your account and then bartwe said a master server will contact the copy for see if it is legit every 3 weeks when possible. Then no online DRM.

Steam can have it's DRM like system, but that doesn't make the Games DRM Only. That way even Terraria was a DRM Game.
