Which of these two statements is more acceptable to society at large?

"I feel that there has been a long time since the last patch, and I am surprised that so little new content has been added. Are the bug fixes this much work, or were the holidays a large factor in this?"

    Or

"It's been 3 weeks and this is all the crap they could throw out? What the heck, I demand my money's worth!"

Let me give you a hint, the correct answer is: "Not what you said."

In fairness, my overall demeanor is less "it's been 3 weeks and this is all the crap they could throw out?" and more "it's been two years and this is all the crap they could throw out?" Other than being able to go between planets and more furniture clutter that doesn't increase gameplay in any way, Terraria had more actual content at launch (which took less time, with less people) than Starbound has managed. As of beta launch, Starbound actually just feels like a horribly balanced Terraria-lite, which is kind of sad for a spiritual successor.

I didn't, though. Every time I've voiced disappointment, regardless of how civil I've been, I've been berated into the ground by people who can't do anything but praise Chucklefish.

But we're getting off-topic at this point. I'm just looking forward to actually having a reason to play again.

Considering you are in fact on the official Chucklefish forums, it makes logical sense that fans of Chucklefish would be on their forum, no?
I'll admit the Starbound forum goers are among the more defensive forums around, but you can't expect to walk into Rome and start denouncing Romans and get away with it.

We're also technically in a beta forum which is exactly the spot to voice your opinion about changes you'd like to see before the game is 'final.' But, going by the posts I saw when they first went live with the planet tier changes, disagreeing with any design decision is absolutely unacceptable in these parts, no matter how you phrase your complaint. There's a difference between people being supportive of Chucklefish and taking -everything they say and do- as word of God, which is what happens far more commonly in these parts. That and theoretically, we aren't in ancient Rome anymore. Nowadays you can (and many people do) waltz into Washington DC and start denouncing the people who live and work there. :p

I wasn't saying you were wrong for voicing your opinion or anything. I'm a big advocate of opposition, even if I disagree. I'm just saying it should be expected. And as I said, these forums are among the more defensive ones I've visited. Yes, but people get flak for that too. ;p

Think of it this way. People are denouncing you and the things you say, and you don't appreciate it, right?

So, why would other people appreciate you doing that same thing to them?

If you can find the directions or actions that you disagree with, you can work out differences with people. If you start attacking the person, and not their stance/argument, then it's just a flame war with no end.

Example: I think your tone is slightly abrasive, and implies you've had a bad experience with the community or these forums and you won't let it go. That's fine, you can still have some good ideas.

The things I don't like are when you say "They should have done more in 2 years!" 2 years is arbitrary, they've come as far as they have, as fast as they can. Voicing discontent with the amount of time that has passed is a waste of time. It doesn't help us right now, and it doesn't help us in the future.

If you say "Here are some of the features that have currently been implemented that I feel should have been much lower on the priority list..." then this is constructive. This tells the devs that they should re-evaluate their priorities, and allows the community to voice agreement or disagreement with your personal priority order, and the devs can take this feedback and modify or stay the course.

When you say "Everyone disagrees with me and shouts me down!" What does this accomplish? This is just complaining about things that have happened in the past, and you don't even include the reasoning behind why the actions happened. If you say "Chucklefish is bad, yo" then expect people to shout you down. If you say "I think Chucklefish has promised a lot and set expectations very high, and they are not living up to those expectations" then this is more constructive, yet still communicates that you do not feel they are making good progress.

As you even say, beta forums are THE place to give feedback and talk about things you do/don't want implemented before release. I haven't seen you provide any examples. You've just given "unactionable feedback." This is feedback that says "I don't like it." You don't explain what you don't like, or why you don't like it, or how you would like things to be.

I think if you were more constructive in your statements, then you would find a lot of people being much more civil with you.

    *Edit*
Also, comparing this to Terraria is really not good. They are different games using different programming languages, different environments, and they have different goals.

Terraria world generation happens once, per world. Starbound generates worlds whenever you want it to.
Terraria does not allow items to be used for both background and foreground. Items are statically foreground-only, or background-only. Starbound can allow any block in either area.
Terraria was likely a smaller, less-ambitious project that was completed extraordinarily well. Starbound has very high ambitions and has a good-but-unfinished product right now. Expectations for the two are very different.

Because Terraria already exists, in it's patched and updated state, people compare that final state to the beta state of Starbound. Even on release, Starbound may not be "Everything and more" that Terraria was. Why? Because Terraria has had significantly more time for development, and feedback, and patching.

First: SB's starmap is essentially the exact same as Terrarias world creation menu, there's no difference, other than the way you choose what kind of map you want and there's a cost for doing it. You can take 1 charachter to several worlds in Terraria as well.
Secondly: That's a minor difference, and while it does make for quicker housebuilding, Terraria has "unique" background and forground "tiles". It's nothing major really.
Thridly: SB is pretty much at the same scale as Terraria, it's just that the "universe" gives the illusion of it being bigger. I've seen no features, scrapped/announced or currently in, that are in any way on a larger scale than Terraria's.
And Lastly: He was comparing SB now to the launch of Terraria, not Terraria as it is now.

I'm not saying that SB is a bad game, or that it couldn't possibly be better than Terraria btw. I still got a few small hopes left for this game, altho I doubt it'll ever be anything that I'll like very much, considering how it's going atm. I just felt like pointing out the fact that the scale of SB isn't as grand and epic as some people seem to belive. :)

You make good points about comparisons, except I think you are underestimating the programming required for the game to recognize foreground vs background. Or, I'm overestimating it.

I also think there's a big difference between the scale of what Starbound is right now, and the scale of what Starbound hopes to be one day.

If you want to make a skyscraper, you can't just take a one story building and add a floor. And another floor, etc. The building will collapse. You need significantly more structure, framework, and a better foundation to even allow for the possibility that the building will one day be a skyscraper. That is my assumption of why Starbound development takes a long time.

If you've ever played Jenga, then you should understand what happens if you try to make a tall tower using a makeshift foundation.

Do we even have any idea of what SB is striving to become? Because right now it feels like if even the devs don't really know where they want to take it
I have played Jenga (altho it's called by a different name where I live), but I just can't see any foundation for anything of a grand/epic scale in the game. Planets are not interlinked (all planets a player isn't on is in pausmode for example), the tiersystem (altho said to be placeholder) is one of the most un-original designs I've ever seen, and the randomization is diluted by the number of planets there is and (as far as I know) there are no randomly generated dungeons anywhere (I've only seen predefined structures anyways).
Once more, I'd like to point out that the game might be good in some people's eyes, it's not currently my cup of tea.

Just fine. I'm occupied with other things such as drawing, Youtube (curently Crash Course. Go learning about World History), anime, manga, other video games, and other kinds of stuff. Really, I'm occupied enough that there's no issue with waiting. I'll take a look on the forums or the Starbound Reddit for a second every few hours or so, but I'm easily occupied.

The foundation that I'm talking about is in the programming code. The way you start out a program drastically changes if you want this program to be able to do more things than the initial intended purpose, later.

I'm kinda lacking in other examples, but if you know exactly what a program is intended to do, and you don't ever want to change it, you can sculpt it perfectly to handle that task and only that task. If you try to change those types of programs later...good freaking luck.

I think there's a funny joke out there about how different levels of programmers do "Hello, World." Entry level programmers have a single line that says "Well, tell the screen to say 'Hello, World'..." Really experienced programmers have a gigantic, 500+ line mini-skynet that checks all sorts of variables and settings and options, yet ultimately produces the exact same results...

This is a joke, of course (the way that Dilbert is a joke), but think of it like this. The starter programmer's version can only ever do one single thing, print "Hello, World" in English. The experienced programmer's code could change languages based on OS, or print other words instead...

One of these programs takes almost no time, but can't ever be expanded. I get the feeling that Starbound's code is planned for expansion, which means that they need to leave doors open for future options, even if they aren't currently using them. That takes a lot of time and planning.

As for after the patch, I'll most likely play at a slower and steadier pace than just trying to grind until last tier... :)

Actually, in a way it kind of is in the game's base code before it goes public. Right now it's in early beta and not really out as a game yet, it's a test. Key word being early. Also nobody (sane) is expecting you to be happy with everything. Your opinion is your own and you have a right to be disappointed for your own reasons and to voice said opinion. You should, however, write as if you are talking to someone in person. Such hostilities that are common in text are never acceptable in person, and are why you encounter such resistance.
