I was almost done building the exterior of my house. I had just about finished the roof made out of bricks collected from other houses, and then BAM! A massive meteor cleaves right through the center of all my hard work!

the damage wasnt too bad honestly. The biggest problem was that it smashed right through my storage. I had to scramble to collect and organize everything. Fortunately I had just enough bricks left over to at least repair the damages, though it meant that the completion of the roof would be delayed until I found another source of bricks. The night was spent toiling away at repairing the damages. I had only just completed the repairs at sunrise, and then BAM! 4 more massive chunks of space debris wipe the entire house into nonexistence.

Does anyone know if I can refine these meteor chunks into something neat? like maybe meteor bricks?

    Sorry about the house! :(

One of my starter planets had nightly meteor showers that took out my base (before I finally moved), so I collected pieces of meteor, as well. Not sure if you can do anything with it, but that would be cool. I'm curious about the same thing!

I hate these meteors. I think there needs to be an indicator whether a planet will have meteors or not

You can see craters in the background.

Oh, very cool! Thanks for the tip!

Any indicators of an acid rain planet? If it's not meteors, it's the rain.

Mine has meteor showers and no craters in the background.

Maybe it just means there'll be any HUGE meteors.

What Sankto said: craters in the background are NOT a foolproof indicator of presence or absence of meteor showers. So far there is no trustworthy indication except for the meteors themselves when it's too late.

Thanks for clarification! I guess that's too good to be true. :)

The meteor/background connection has been debunked pretty well in this Reddit post.

There's nothing in the code to indicate a link between meteors and background craters.

The best way to know if there are meteors on a planet is to look at your house. if it is currently being destroyed by meteors, there are definitely meteors on the planet. If it is not currently being destroyed by meteors, there may or may not be meteors on the planet.

I was talking about huge meteors yes.

    My bad then.

I guess I'll just use a mod when I'll build my house.

That's what I eventually did. There's one that stops all meteors, and one that just stops them from destroying blocks (but they'll still damage you).

when it rains, you get damage

Thanks! I actually haven't found a planet yet that didn't hurt me when it rained. I think I'll be surprised to find a planet with normal water falling from the sky!

I meant was there a way to look at the planet or background and tell before it rains if it's acidic. Seeing the topic above about meteors, I think the answer is probably "no."

Pretty much build minimally until the first weather event. Whatever weather there is, it's the only weather.

If it is meteor and you still want to build, have enough cobblestone on hand to be about 16 -20 blocks thick and a little longer than what you want to build and build a rectangular shield on/above the roof.

As far as I've noticed when I've done that, the actual strikes only happen when you are around, so you can refill the shield before heading out again -- usually you get all or almost all the cobblestone blocks right back so it doesn't take that long. It's just something that makes you be proactive.

If what that Reddit post said is true, then the background is unrelated to the weather. You might be already aware, but the developers suggested there will be an update to the ship's navigation system that will let us know beforehand if a planet has hazardous weather, but it's apparently still in the works.

I'd be careful- there are other threads about meteors active in which people claim there can be meteors in planets with other weathers as well. Also, they claim meteors spawn at the edge of your screen, so being indoors causes them to spawn indoors, making shields useless. I can't say those are true myself, haven't tested it.

but I had been on this planet for at least 5 hours and i had no idea there would be meteors until this happened. as far as i know there are planets which dont have any weather events at all. i cant just wait around for hours and hours to see if something happens. besides, i had no idea meteors could get that big

I don't think it works if the shield is off-screen.
