So i was downloading a linux iso file (about 700Megabytes) by http/ftp and it was so SLOW. Firefox said that it would take 7 hours, so i assume that it was gonna take probably 1-2 hours since these estimations are usually exaggerated. Instead of doing that, I decided to use a torrenting client instead (rtorrent) and OMG that thing came in MINUTES! So now i wonder if torrenting or using UDP+some program to keep the data organized gives so much speed, why isnt this a standard/trend? Besides torrenting sites, I only see torrent files from linux image distributors and a few websites that deal with open source software, so why dont i see this more often?
I'm fairly certain most DRM-free Humble Store purchases have a torrent option for downloading. My main reason for not using torrents is due to the supposed security risks with BitTorrent-related software.
I'm not sure why Off Topic was renamed "General Discussion". A lot of people seem to be confused and post here about Starbound.
Well this is the thread to talk about anything, including starbound. I mean, I don't go to any other thread really, so if i wanted to talk about starbound to starbound players, this is the place for me lol
Yeah, and being moved above the rest of the forums didn't help much either. Meanwhile, playing Starbound with friends is hard because of my crappy computer and its faulty wireless thingy making my connection drop constantly. Although my main complaints with it for now are mainly the hotbar. The fact that I get six slots that have to be a L/R pair is a huuuuuge pain. I know I can switch to a second set too, but that only makes it worse when in the heat of the moment, I'm on my dedicated torch/block/instrument bar because they all take up L and R and I have to panic and find my weapons. At the least, I kinda wish it still retained how you could hit your Matter Manipulator button and then hit it again to get back to what it was on. ...also friends being on survival doesn't help things, i reaaaaaally hate item dropping mechanics, even if it's not all of them, it's a huge pain in the ass. i could take hunger and stuff but ughhhh On a brighter note, I've been spamming my Twitter with Fantasy Maiden Wars lately, which is a fangame that's a combination of Touhou and Super Robot Wars. ...So as one might assume, yeah, I've been having a really fun time with it.
I'm not talking about this thread, I'm talking about the General Discussion section that this thread is in. There are a bunch of moved threads.
Well damn... Starbound, I wanted to like you, but you have proven yourself to be managed by what can only be likened to a team of depressed husks. After trying to enjoy it for 55.4 hours (according to Steam), I've just about had it with this. There's no nuance, no motivation, and no reward. It's an exercise in existentialism, with wildly inconsistent quality of design throughout a barren bland world of ham.
Yeah, its not exactly what you would call a great game, its building systems are much more rewarding than combat, and while its modability is great, its gating of things like ship upgrades behind massive amounts of cash requirement, only getting extra crew via compulsive side quests that often resume themselves to "run to x, get y, come back, go to z, party bag", its all a lot of design flaws, but truth be told? While I know it isn't the best game ever made, its building aspect is so much better than terraria I can forgive most of its issues, the potential it shows tells me this is the best shell of a game you could possibly grow up from regarding how well founded its 1.0 is compared to something akin to terraria, and to be frank, so long as they realize that the last thing Starbound needs right now is more cosmetic furniture and blocks, I think itl still shape up to be a good game. Admittedly it should have been one since 1.0, but ah well.
You can upgrade the ship using ship upgrade modules instead of money by maxing out the number of crew members on it. Also, it's worth mentioning that the game was a better shell in Early Access than it is now. The updates right before and including 1.0 cut and removed almost all of the stuff that made the game interesting.
Its extremely boring to add more crew members due to the side questing, hence why I mentioned it. Guess ill just strip mine the nearest asteroid or planet and pixel everything in it. What did you think made the game interesting?Im curious about that, I didnt notice a massive change in terms of content, minus the obvious story retcons I still hate. Maybe my opinion is unpopular, but I loved the interspecies banter of the florans and hylotls, cutthroat stuff, now they all just live together and happy, blech.
I can't say with certainty what all of that content was, but the 1.0 update did remove a significant chunk of content, which mostly included stuff that had no reason to be removed. The most blatant example is racial weapons and bonuses.
I do remember racial weaponry being removed, but we even had racial bonuses?I though it was established since back when they wouldn't do that to make equality, shit reason in my opinion, but I was certain we never had anything to begin with.
I need to go and find the videos blog posts of this, but each race was to have their own unique story with cutscenes voiced by Bastion's narrator!
There was talks of racial armors granting different bonuses, but those were scrapped too. As for gathering crew, isn't there penguim for hire after you beat dreadwing? I haven't used it but I think hiring penguin mercs count for maximum crew, doesn't it? Furthermore, a dev blog mentioned that starting a colony also supplies you with potential crewmembers, so if you enjoy buolding above all else, that might be the best option. I do miss the race specific origins. I don't really mind the whole Novacorps Terran Protectorate thing, but I think membership should come afterwards if you decide to go throught with the main story. That's what's interesting about Early Access games. I wonder how we'd receive it if this version was the only one we'd ever gotten.
Found the videos, still searching for the original blog post. Human WIP intro here, and Avian here. IIRC, the blog post also had screenshots of the Floran intro, and perhaps others.
