Cool ideas, especially the one about pressure. I should add that on hypothetic planet with extreme amounts of water (at least 2 magnitudes higher than we have here on Earth) there will be so much pressure (in Earth-like gravity) that at depth of about 80 km or so (may be mistaken in exact number, but still right in broad sense of fact) there will be type 8 (I think it's 8) ice: liquid so dense that it stopped being liquid. Of course, water higher than definite type 8 ice layer will be extremely dense, crushing everything and being almost metallic in texture.

So, high liquid (not exclusively water; methane is good too for cold planets, and various lava lakes for hot ones; both can be overwhelmed with sufficient technology) pressure should not just damage characters and their submarine vessels: it's viscosity should become gradually higher.

Oh, and I want to be able to build underwater, constructing isolating rooms and draining liquid out. Would be cool if high water pressure could penetrate/damage even artificial walls, so we had to either build underwater structures from stronger materials (not dirt and wood, more like dungeon bricks or their equivalent) or at least make them more thick.

Submerged lovecraftian horrors are a must. Genetic and procedural generation could went nuts there, balance and "fairness" be damned. If you don't want to meet Cthulhu himself, you probably should stay out of deep water.

    YES! Exactly!

Yeah, or a giant octopus that you have to cut of its limbs to defeat.

This reminds of Super Mario Galaxy, where one planet was a ball of water. Yes, that would be a very interesting thing to see.

Maybe, but scuba gear shouldn't allow you to go too deep, maybe just 200 blocks or more or less.

Yeah, that's a good point! If they put water planets in the game, I'm gonna make it my home world.

This makes me think about something that Terraria didn't really have and I'm wishing that this game can convey - actual scary stuff.

Yeah, but planets in starbound will have varying gravity level, some with lower gravity some with higher gravity, so on lower gravity water planets the ice would be lower or there would be no ice at all.

Pressure damage and building under water are good ideas! You could build supports in your underwater buildings to keep the pressure from completely destroying your buildings. There could also be leaks that you have to patch before your building gets filled with water, and the higher the pressure outside, the more water comes in.

Haha yeah, stay in the shallows and let the narwhals take care of Cthulhu! :)

It is, yes. And it can become more interesting and unique by showing reality more real. At least where it does not cripples gameplay or something equally important. I am far from being rabid fanatic of "realistic simulation everywhere", but if there are two ways to do something, and both are equally or comparably awesome - why choose less realistic one?

While I certainly agree, some planets would be mostly water, I don't think going crazy with ocean planets would be a good idea.

Procedural generation basically dictates that there will be a planet of complete water, and one without any water at all.

Okay, you made your point, and a good one at that.

I like this idea, and would like to add that I'd like a battleship of some kind. I think a lot of people are adding things that they think should be going on down beneath the surface, but on the surface there could be pirate enemies, or perhaps giant killer seagulls. Even without going deep down, if the people of these water planets were to be pirate like, then things like treasure chests with money inside could be hidden underneath beaches, and there could be things like blueprints for cannons that could be made to only be found on planets of these types.

Good idea! One of the first ideas That I had for ocean planets was to have boats so I can say "LAND HO!" I would love to have pirates in the game, and when you shoot them down you can dive underwater a search their ship for more treasure!

Hmm an ocean planet, that would go great with a diving suit and you could go down to collect rare materials.
