I have an innate fear of deep water... while playing video games. In real life, I'm completely fine with the ocean and what not. I believe it's the fear of the unknown that gets me, as I have no idea what nasty things have been programmed into a game.

Skyrim, for this reason, does my head in. I know there is nothing other than the little fang fish in the fresh water areas and there is absolutely nothing in the ocean. And yet my imagination screams at me I need to quickly swim to the next iceberg lest some ancient horror of the deep get me.

Personally, I'd love to have a creature in Starbound that you can't see until the very last second be swimming around in some oceans. If you've played Half-Life 2, think of the nasty water beast that you see when you attempt to teleport.

Giant oceans, plus fish, mollusks, cnidarians, and other stuff, plus sea monsters, plus boats equals BEST OCEAN EVAR.
Can't wait to see some life in these oceans!

Play the first Half-Life instead, where said water beast is a late-game enemy.

I wonder how much life the oceans will have? Right now we just have large and empty blue, but how many different types of swimmy-things will there be onscreen at a given depth? Will there be schools of fish, or just larger, singular beasts? Also, I think any kind of fishing mechanic should require you to actually nab a mob in the water, rather than just materializing a random fish.

 

Idk why but i feel the starbound ocean appeals to me more than the real ocean so beautiful

 

I want a little orange inflatable dingy to float around on. Just cause I find those entertaining. I hope there's going to be fishing eventually...

I think if Chucklefish adds some depth-based shading so the water gets darker as you get deeper, it'll be even more awesome. Then we could have things like lanternfish in the deep ocean...

 

Now that you mention it, the water looks incredibly smooth in that screenie. In my mind I had assumed a Terraria-like deal without actually looking.
Personally, I don't think the devs will overlook such a basic ocean mechanic. Still, I like how in the screenshots it looks like it will take some actual depth for deep-sea permanight to set in, in Terraria you couldn't go down a few feet without needing some kind of light.

As long as the progression from light to dark is slow, i would hate to have to use lights in all my diving. Im imagining pretty coral reefs and stuff that you would find in-b/w the surface and abysmal depths that you refer to. Also...submarines...

 

That picture of the ocean terrifies me. I think someone already said this, but I also have an intense fear of oceans in video games. Seriously every second I expect some horrible monstrosity from the deep to come up and rustle my jimmies.

 

The only thing i can really say is that is one trendy boat.

 

Reminds me of King's Quest 4, getting chased by sharks and swallowed by the whale...

 

The worst for me was GTAIV, there wasn't anything in the ocean but... I thought there was.
