    Really? That's interesting.

In most cases, I'm pretty sure that they just clothe humanoids in sci fi so they can avoid raising the rating/need less special effects/etc. The fact that there are people in the real world that prefer being nude over being clothed, even as a minority, is more than enough to conclude that other humanoid races could easily be an inversion of that -- a majority only wearing clothes due to weather or for protection against weapons, while being nude the rest of the time.

I dunno, I always assumed humans nudity taboo came about because of our dependency on clothes and thus the fact that we feel "vulnerable" without them I.E we wore clothes to keep warm and not expose our sensitive parts to the environment and eventually we wore them so much that it felt "wrong" to be without them.

That being said clothes for a lot of aliens in starbound seem to be expressions and decoration as much as actual "functional" wear (im looking at you, odd bird robes and plant loinclothes) so maybe wearing clothes is more of a way of expressing or accenting themselves, rather then because of any kind of nudity taboo.

Yeah, Avian clothing is kinda scanty. But then we know some birds like to decorate, so it's no stretch to think that the clothes are more ornamentation... run through the filter of the restrictive class structure imposed by Kluex, more'n likely.

I honestly doubt that humans would give a whit about nudity by the time they can freely scurry about in such advanced FTL space vessels. Moreover, only the Glitch and the Apex have potential excuses for wearing clothing for any reason except the cold; the Glitch because they are by and large stuck with feudal-era morality, and the Apex because they live under a totalitarian regime that could demand its citizens do whatever for whatever its own convenience and own ends might be, and, if old enough (I don't think the Apex government's age is defined -- yet at least), would have the normalcy of wearing clothing for modesty reasons just be status quo for lack of will to change it.

However, the game has to be marketed here and now, in a world of early 21st century morality and with an overabundance of molehill mountaineers, where a mere hyper-pixellated, nipple-less, ordinary female human or even humanoid breast has a non-zero potential to cause quite the fuss.

Personally, I think the Apex would wear clothing because most of them are scientists (from what I understand), and it's stupid to do science without covering yourself. There's a reason flats and short-shorts aren't allowed in the lab.

Yeah, that makes sense. They also wear it to look formal, so they probably use it too,.

Also, uniforms are great tools for suppressing individualism, which seems to be part of Big Ape's whole thing.

They probably all wear clothing for the same general reasons humans wear clothing: warmth, protection, and modesty.
I mean, plants normally don't do well in the cold... florans are a race of hunters, and probably don't enjoy coming across low temperatures during their conquest of the universe.
Avians probably wear clothes for modesty. Despite the fact that they are feathered, it might still be seen as indecent to walk around completely nude in their culture. I mean, if a human was completely covered in so much hair that their gender could not be distinguished, do you not think others would react poorly to that person's nudity?
Apex likely war clothes for protection. Fleas and ticks are everywhere, an dirt is a pain to remove from thick hair. Besides, who would want dangerous chemicals or blood on their natural coat?
Hylotl likely wear cloths for, again, modesty.
The glitch only wear clothes because they are programmed to--they have no other reason to.
    Not sure about the novakid.

Who wouldn't want to talk about tits? They're the second-most majestic bird, after the blue-footed booby.

So anyway, about that full-frontal nudity... Really, I don't even understand why people wear clothes, I just do it out in public so I'm not arrested. And it's one of those silly societal things where, if anyone thinks about it long and hard enough, they might indeed find that they understand it less and less the more they contemplate, rather than more and more, thus betraying that it doesn't make a terribly great amount of sense. ... That's my experience, at least; maybe there are different-minded, and perhaps cleverer(ererer, erer) people out there who such doesn't apply to. At any rate, assuming the latter is not the case, at least, how can anyone here honestly be expected to compehend if and for what reasons sapient aliens would or would not wear clothes?

You're right, they are pretty majestic.

Might as well state my opinion. To me, the only race that should't have to wear cloths, is the Florans. They're plants, do you ever see plants walking around in shorts and a shirt? Probably not, and if you do, what kinda weird world are you living in?

    Imagination land.

Do you ever see birds walking around with clothes? Do you ever see monkeys walking around with clothes (unless they were forced to by humans or something)? Do you ever see frogs (or whatever the Hylotl are most like) walking around in clothes? Do you ever see human-sized, and human-shaped stars possessed of intellect walking around with clothes? Do you ever see robots walking around in clothes? Do you ever see robots that have sapient-level intellect and form a hivemind, for that matter? Do you ever see plants walking around at all?

To make a good video game, fun is mandatory; realism is only optional.

after thinking about It for a while, novakid have no reason whatsoever to wear clothes. Unless they saw another ease wearing it and wanted to look cool. They don't have reproductive organs. They have pretty much no dimorphism except.. Uhh....
    Bewbs.
they have nothing to cover up, as they reproduce by combining gases and a brand.

The glitch don't need clothes either, as they don't carry out sexual reproduction, but they were programmed to, as you said. They lived in medieval times where people had to act all fancy, and if a female glitch walked around without clothes, she would probably be immediately executed or something equally bad.

In order from "cares least" to "punishable by death" for public nudity(in my opinion)

Novakid: are weird. Let's just state that right now. They are energy-beings who dress like cowboys. I really don't know where to go with this, but I would suspect that they would actually care the least about nudity(they sure as anything don't care about political correctness)

Florans: a bit of protection from the weather, some amount of it being wearable trophies, and probably due to them having to work with apex at times(meaning clothing is non-optional when dealing with foreign powers)

I like the avian "clothes as decoration" idea, add to that the mayincatec with sky pirates theme behind the species and well, that would be the main reason. Well that and protection from the elements, but really, most avian garb wouldn't really protect someone from anything but embarrassment, heck even all their armour is stated to be ceremonial garb!

Hylotl: feudal Japan would be my guideline for this, if you know what that's like then please state it here.

Human: regardless of whether or not our notions of modesty have swung to Ancient Greece or Victorian England, humanity(or at least the remaining dregs of it) will be largely militarized most likely. This means uniforms(and armour) for most times, casual clothes the rest of the time.

Apex: an Orwelian nightmare. Uniforms remove individuality, plus the whole "race of scientists" thing means that clothes are going to be non-optional, as is choice of clothes.

Glitch: feudal society(possibly near victorian levels of modesty), enough said

    That's what I suspect anyways.

We did just fine as far north as the southern regions of modern-day Norway and Canada, I believe, before clothes were such a widespread, decidedly mandatory thing.

At any rate, I did mention clothes are good for cold a bit earlier, yes. They're just not very useful for much else. Holding things in, maybe, with pockets, but bags are much better for holding things in, and don't keep in body heat which would be better radiated out in hot weather.

There's not much reason for many people in (just basically pulling an example out of a hat here) e.g. Brazil to wear clothes very often, though; it's just a holdover from the times when they (the lawmakers are chiefly who I'm talking about here, though some sectors of the populace at large, just as well) were silly enough to listen heavily to equally silly organisations and now waning demographics that are peculiarly attached to the status quo, even in ridiculous little particulars like this that are of no real advantage to them. And trust me when I say, if it were up to the average Brazilian, men and women walking around the streets with nary a stitch of clothing would be a much more common sight around Rio de Janiero.

    ETA: Clarity.

I find that in hotter countries where clothes feel superfluous, they're good for keeping annoying pests away. Namely mosquitoes, the little fuckers.
    Pardon my French.
