Does anyone have any idea who the initial few NPCs are going to be, the ones that are on the station? Will there be a backstory for them if no one can say?

One last question, will there be a way to customize NPCs or find new ones to do different jobs?

I'm not sure but I hope that you start alone, and you have to work (do quests), in order to get some NPCs!

Atleast one other character would be good to develop the quest line. Maybe the home planet of this other one got destroyed too, and you're assuming a plot behind this all.

    Hehehehehehehehehehe......

    The Return of the Guide.....hehehehehe....

In all honesty, I have no idea.

I think having the Space station as a guide would be a wonderful way to get someone used to it, Like an AI

it would save the developers time explaining how someone else is on the station.

I would personally love to see some sort of advanced AI construct as your lone friend for the beginning of the game, so long as it doesn't open the goddamn doors and let the zombies in.

I don't think they've told us too much about NPC's yet, but I guess you can tame animals and stuff. I'd guess that you start off with a few NPC's, like how you started with a guide in Terraria (I hope Bradley never returns ever again...), but maybe it will be like a scientist. This is just a guess, because I have no idea.

I don't think they'd give away this amount of information yet ;) But I do think we'll start off with the most useful (Until higher levels) For now!

I'm going to go with either this, or when you escape your burning homeworld, your ship has a science officer and an engineering officer on it.

Alternatively, you activate the station AI and have it do a scan for other survivors, then go find them as part of the main story.

As I read this, I thought of Adam (or the Navigation Room to most lol) in Metroid Fusion.

    We must have this..

But a "best friend" type character aboard the station wouldn't hurt either.

I think you might have to rescue npcs from different planets instead of starting with them.. just a guess

  15. Tur1sta

    Tur1sta Aquatic Astronaut

I hope this is the case for some of the NPC's. Having them spawn naturally into your home doesn't make them feel as important as something that you have to put some effort into. If we do have to same them, then I hope AI pathing would be good. A good variety of design on npc's would be nice, so that if one of your npc's die, his/her clone doesn't pop out of nowhere.

They already stated that part of the game will be literally carrying people off of planets to rescue them. :p

Yes!! I wonder if rescuing them would be like cortex command? Where you would have to summon a drop ship and designate a landing area.

how will you do quests if to start one, you need to talk to an NPC?

You don't 'need' to talk to an NPC.. My thoughts on it is that the station -should- have an AI (We all know how funny AI's can be when done right :) ), but it should not start off with a functioning AI. We already know that when we bump into the space station, it is decrepit and abandoned. There is nothing to say, however, that we don't already have a quest as soon as we start the game aboard it. Something as simple as 'explore the space station.' Upon exploration the character discovers that some of the systems still function, and that the station has a functioning dropship to take them to other planets. Their homeworld is gone, but their species is not extinct because space travel means that the species will have spread to other planets (most likely.) Establishing the space station as their home base, the player does not need an NPC to tell them 'Go to a planet and find other life forms.' In such a situation it would occur to the individual that this station is a good base, since you are currently lacking in the planet department. They just need to find sentient life that can assist in its repair. The first planet you visit can be guaranteed to spawn you a mechanic or something similar. The first repair being to get the AI functioning, which can then provide more specific quests or objectives, as well as basic information about the station.
