This update brings up one of my issues with shield generators. I am all for destruction protection... but building feels like a very core aspect. Not being able to place even TORCHES, much less platforms, feels like it turns a building game into a forced platformer. Will there be any way to disable, or modify, this functionality?
I actually liked the hunger bar, along with the farming. Since you are basically on the starting planet until you can get geared to get to the core, there is nothing to do beyond kill things and mine. That gets old long before getting down to the core to get those fragments. I actually enjoyed putting time and work into maintaining a farm, growing my stock of seeds, and watching it expand. Theres a LOT of players who like making a homestead like that, and even for those not really into it, its still a diversion from dig and slash. The game has not been improved by this removal, its lost a huge part of its charm for me. So now since we cant even craft a hoe anymore, why bother putting the wheat seeds in the starting locker? Why bother with ANY of the crop system at all now that it has no point? Hey dev team, options are a GOOD thing.
The new hunger system seams good. But it could work with the old one in the same time. Meaning, you have to eat because of the deminishing bar, but when you eat you get buffs and when you are full you can't eat no more. Being close to starving you get a debuff and being full gives you additional buff to avoid not eating enough to not get full.
Now that eating food is going to be incredibly useful instead of a requirement to have a stack of boltbulbs in my inventory, I can't see any reason to make a farm.
...wait, I don't recall them saying they were getting rid of crafted food items. I mean, you're still gonna need to farm ingredients to make bigger and better dishes for bigger and better buffs, yes? Or buy them, I suppose, but the point being, you still need those farmable foods to MAKE more foods, thus, you have a reason to farm. ON ANOTHER SUBJECT... It hit me... will the dungeon shield also prevent the use of the paint tool? I've found leaving paint marks on the walls a nice touch when navigating the bigger places, know where I've been, that sorta thing. I'd kinda hope that you could still use it.
Too bad hunger is being removed. It added a lot of charm and an element of survivability to the game. Not a change I much care for.
EH WHY HUNGER WHYYYY!!!! no but seriously, that was some of the more fun parts like the heat/cold mechanic which admittedly could have been more interesting as it was too easy to to gear and forget it. But that and the hunger were for sure the things that made the biggest impressions on me back when I played at first. Removing it just feels so I duno like removing a core mechanic.
There's this SNES RPG, Star Ocean, that actually HAD taste as a factor. Each game character had a favorite food that would give them full HP when consumed. Since you didn't know the favorites until you tried them you had to make a large portion of the game's food recipes to find all the favorites. Here's an idea: give a randomized taste spectrum over all the foods ingredients for all characters, weight it with racial traits. Eating raw ingredients would just give the weighted health/buffs, but prepared foods would give weighted health and buffs of all its ingredients with some added multiplier. The players would need to find out for themselves what foods their character likes . Finding that recipe that combines ingredients your character really likes would be a treasure unique to your character, and people (PC or NPC) who know how to make your favorite would be valuable. Also merchants could pay more for foods they like and so on.
Having a little experience with pistols vs rifles: The difference should not be damage, but accuracy. Pistol accuracy should be such that they're only useful in close combat, while rifles should be accurate over long ranges.
So you're nerfing guns even more? I haven't played nightly in a few months, but handguns were already pretty much worthless. Now they're going to do half the damage of rifles and still consume more energy? You should just have buffed most rfiles, or at least tweak the expensive energy cost of firing pistols. Also, still no sign of reload mechanics. The rest of the changes sound good, but please try to make guns a bit less boring.

The lights i like very much, no more digging through the dungeon and now no more torchspam^^ (+) The Guns i don't really care about because i am more of a sword person. But for those who like to "bähmbhäm" its nice i gues Hmmm, really? The Hungersystem will go? why? who complained? All those who are to lazy to collect even 10 pieces of ore? Sry for this outburst, but for me Starbound always was\is a "Survivalgame", and now you want to take one of the most importat immersive features for a survivalgame out of it? So many are complaining about to high costs in the game.... "Well sry guys but if you don't want to invest at least some time into a game you should not play rpgs..." Yeah, ofc it can be aggrovating to keep the food in mind, but then please give us a option to choose.... which again would give CF more work to do.... I'm a bit scared now and i really do not understand where that comes from. Didn't see a vote or anything about that in the forum. Or was\is it a CF decision? I don't know why, but I am always bugged with gun damage nerfs. I would rather have guns have other types of nerfs than damage ones. Make low tier guns less accurate, lower rate of fire, use a ton of energy, or some other drawback than damage. Maybe its because I wish physics wouldn't be sacrificed for gameplay. There are a lot of other ways to nerf or change the effectiveness of guns over changing damage. Why would anyone carry around a BB gun?
Hunger makes game more interesting, it gives you one more problem to think about... It will be quite borring without hunger, too easy... Also I think Glitch should have not the hunger but energy/fuel bar and consume not food but coal/oil/uranium atc. That sure will make game even more interesting!
please don't take the hunger bar away! it was one of the things i thought was the coolest and most unique about starbound. (among many other things ) if anything, the punishment for going hungry could be ~50% armour and eventually slower movement if it reaches 0% - instead of death.
