I imagine EVERY novakid probably has to keep a journal/diary around.

Or that would be a LOT of post-it notes on there research area.

and I was commenting on there lore, people will do what people do and even then there are
    ALWAYS exceptions to the rule!

Besides the only thing race effect's as far as I remember is the stuff you can make at the start in till you
    start finding blueprints.

I hope the Novakids technology will be a bit steampunk looking:

Yeah I think a steam punk like building scheme would help differentiate them
a lot more than just being cowboys it would certainly add more color to them
besides I don't think there's a lot you can do cowboy wise with buildings and the like.

Man, I cannot -wait-. I hope they can get the Novakid assets figured out soon, I'm dying to try out some options in the creator.

I hope they add them in the creator for you guy's but I would like to point out they said the stretch goals would be playable upon release,
that could very well mean they wont be in beta, but here's hoping they will be there for you guy's!

[and that they update the character creator as well]

I believe that the point is being missed here. So many assume that they're readily forgetful... the novakids own arrogance is their problem. They disreguard anything beyond the status quo because they're focused on mining resources for their own gain. And distilling the minerals into sunshine or moonshine, as the creator called it because they need it to survive.

They're not retarded or momentarily forgetful (like a bad temporary memory) They're just arrogant and don't want to be bothered with much beyond the status quo. So lessons are forgotten and skills are lost.

Carl awoke with a gasp, undershirt clinging to his bulging belly on account of how sweaty he was. Another nightmare of the Parfelian invasion of his home-moon.
It always came back to him when he was particularly stressed. The scratching - the screams - the sight of all those bodies torn to pieces. Mechanical claws rip
through flesh like a bullet through butter. You'd think a species that buries it's feces would have the decency to bury the dead, but you'd be wrong. Why was
Carl stressed you ask? Well you would be too if you were hauling 5 tonnes of highly explosive cargo this close to a sun. Carl doesn't fear many things besides
fluffy stuff but exploding to death is one of those things, go figure.

"S'to much ta ask fer 1 night of sleep rund hur!?"

Please excuse Carl's accent, he spent several of his impressionable years on 'Reddit IV' after the loss of his home. Now that he was finally up Carl strapped his
tool belt below his (large) waist , slipped on his favorite boots and headed for the door of his tiny bedroom. You might be thinking "Wait Carl! You forgot to put on pants!"
But you can't talk to him, it's my story. And besides - Carl works alone on this ship and therefore pants are as unnecessary as they are uncomfortable.
After getting a cup of the universe's worst simulated coffee Carl heads to the cockpit. Thankfully for his stubby legs the majority of the ship is cargo space. Everything
seemed fine (No blinky lighty things) but something was off. Pretty much everything get's passed Carl but not on his ship, no sir! Carl knew every sound this ship could
make as if they were his own (some were). The concerning thing was not a sound but the lack of sounds. Sheala II (Name after his second ex-wife) was a noisy beast when
running at full speed but not today.

Sheala was running as quiet as the day he got (stole) her. Much to the dismay of the families of bacteria vacationing on Carl's face, he concerningly furrowed his brow and set off
at a reasonable pace towards the engine at the back-end of the ship. The door was closed to the engine room which is odd since hes left it open ever since he broke one
of the engine's coolant fans while trying to fix it. A few greasy keypad strokes and the door receded into the wall with a faint *psht* sound. Something wasn't right indeed.
The engine was giving off a healthy hum (NOT normal) and the engine room was filled with some kind of orangie-yellow fog. Carl covers his mouth with his sweat and coffee stained
undershirt and starts towards left side of the room where he remembers the ventilation switch to be. Carl's boot connects with something metal on the ground, sending it clinking and
    clanging behind the engine.

Carl feels around the wall for the switch but no luck. Maybe it was the right side wall after all. Carl was sweating again, he hadn't noticed but the temperature in the room had gone up
very quickly. Assuming that was not a good sign Carl orientates himself by feeling for the corner of the wall and starts heading to the right side of the room. About half way there Carl
is stunned by a blinding flash of yellow light and a faint sucking sound. Promising not to pee himself Carl curls into a ball and waits a moment for his sight to come back. Whatever was
causing the heat had dissipated and his vision was coming back. The fog seems to have gone as well as taking the light from the room with it. Carl scratched at his scalp trying to remember
where the light switch was... left or right?

    "You must be Carl."

Carl stood up startled by someones voice other than his own.

    "Ern... w-who's there?"

    "They call me Solare."

    "Who... where r u?"

"Behind the engine, where you kicked me."

Carl leaned against the wall, not tempted in the least to move closer to the engine. A form moved out from behind the engine. The shape of a man but unlike any man Carl had ever seen.
A flame shaped metal brand was attached to it's face but that appeared to be the only solid thing about it. Gas? Liquid? What it was made of seemed impossible to tell. The faint light emitting
from his body made shadows duel on the walls.

    "Novakid?"

"Very astute" replied the man of stars.
"I fixed the engine. These belong to you I assume." With a smirk Solare tossed Carl a pair of torn grease stained pants.
"You have welding materials in this room yet you used clothing to hold some of the engine together... are you lazy or just an idiot?"

"T-the weld'n gun broke long times ago" Carl replied slowly.

"An idiot then? It just needed charging."

Carl didn't know much about Novakids but he knew he didn't like this one.

"How'n you get on my ship?"

Solare had no facial features but Carl could tell the man had a temper on account of the room growing hotter every time Carl seemed to talk.

"Solare huh? You never askn my name..."

The temperature shot up and there was a blinding flash of yellow light. Before Carl could blink Solare's burning plasma hand was through his chest and into the wall behind him,
Carl didn't feel pain... just cold... and tired. He knew he was dying fast since there was an arm where his heart should be. Carl's life didn't flash by his eyes - only his regrets.
Never returning to his birth moon after it was liberated, never having children, never getting out of the smuggling business. Not long now...

"Your name is Carl Donovan - and you stole my favorite ship."

I think "retarded" is a bit excessive.

Just because somebody has a short attention span doesn't make them retarded, they can manage space travel so they can't be too dumb...

The post-it idea is actually pretty funny. I like it.
And now that you say exception to the rule, are the characters we will play in the game not always somewhat outcast from their original society? If I remember that correct.

Of course I exeggerated. Thats because everybody just says "They are so awesome[...]" but never ever mention their downsides.
And as i stated I'm not at all against this race, I like them pretty much.

Holy mantles! That was an interesting story of justice!
You should probably continue the adventures of Solare with more imaginery stories.

..Altough I have to wonder...Is Carl's dream suopose to be of the Glitch?

    Eh,cool story anywayz.

They can't grasp interracial social interactions? They clearly have Aspergers Syndrome. OK then, tell me, how well do you interact with OTHER intelligent life? When we find other intelligent life we might be completely hopeless with them too. Aspergers Syndrome also has it's good points too though. People with it tend to be slightly more intelligent on average, as well as a heightened sense of hearing. I've clearly made no sense to you though, because I have Aspergers Syndrome and can't grasp how to say it.

How well we will do when we meet other intelligent life is a pretty good question. But in the scenario of Starbound they are the only ones where a the social inability is highlighted, so I assume in starbound the other races have no such problems.
Also I have known that they are in average more intelligent but that they hear slightly better is new to me. Pretty interesting.
I don't know if your last sentence was meant as joke since i understood you just fine.

  15. Bynn_Error

    Bynn_Error Cosmic Narwhal

    That is a good question!

So I starting digging around more!

and the about page say's our adventure start's by us
"Fleeing our home world" this could easily mean we were exiled
but it could also mean we were under heavy attack and we were
only civilians so we were evacuated.

it also say's it "Contains both Quest and Story driven missions"
Story driven missions could mean one set chain of missions
but that does not mean it wont branch, so chances are we could very
well start exile but maybe even ally with our own people afterwards.

So after taking that all into account it does Lean towards exile in the about
    page.

Can't they just be Sociopaths with ADHD?

Because I would be totally into that. =D

    EDIT: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/meet-the-novakid.16712/ - Interspecies Relations -
"a given Novakid community is not likely to ever meet another space-traveler. But when they DO meet, they are very excited and personable and ask a lot of questions. However, Novakids will become familiar very fast, and typically end up becoming too familiar, often making inappropriate jokes or observations." So I guess that DO have Aspergers... just a bunch of rural, glowing Michael Scotts.

I love the Novakids, I think they've got my favorite design so far for a race-species-thing. And the fact that they glow is just really cool. I'd love for them to have all fluidy glowy visual effectson them, but I'm aware that that's probably not going to happen xP

Their splash art compared to the ingame sprites also shows that Starbound isn't for fat people.

I definitely want my first character to be a novakid. They are really cool looking, the basic concept for their race is definitely interesting, and I can't wait to hear some of the back story as well.

I imagine a novakid is like that person you are friends with that doesn't really find day to day social interactions worth their time, such as small talk. They are goal oriented, maybe some adhd, but that is more a testament to their ability to hand multiple types of sensory input at once. Which is what makes them space cowboys. They have the mental sharpness of a blade, but not necessarily the interest in making meaningless acquaintances.

I feel like a cool part of a novakid storyline would be trying to piece together the history of your people through clues and scraps of information left around various parts of the universe.

Edit: Since there's not much to be found, according the the story.
