Euh... make a backup of it?
\Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound, make a copie of the universe and player folder.

As it is for a lot of people, and has been since the base enraged update, which seems mostly to be due to the interactable tag introduced to every single non-block object in the game.

I'm still doing some research, but it appears that the new way Starbound will be handling .pak files is breaking mods that use packed assets. I did the whole "remove all mods then re-install them one by one" and was surprised to find that it was my own mod the one preventing Starbound from launching due to the assets2 error. Because the one currently on the site is not packed yet, my mod was not causing anybody problems except for myself as only I have an unreleased version with .pak files. After I installed the same version but with unpacked assets Starbound was running fine again... until I installed another mod with .pak files. I'm not entirely sure how to make packed assets compatible with Unstable yet, but that seems to be the cause of that error.

Edit: I think I got it now, it just didn't work the first time. Basically the author of the conflicting mod needs to use the asset_packer again to pack onto a non-existent .pak file and it will make it compatible with the new .pak system. So there's that.

Edit 2: Okay, so I hope fellow modders also have a backup of the old asset_unpacker.exe because apparently the new one cannot unpack old .pak files. So I can't make the mods I have installed compatible and play... :wut:

Whats the point in adding an "Unstable" branch to the game when it's already unstable enough as it is...Starbound is getting all fucked up ):
Also, removing the sectors is another bad idea. The sectors gave me something to strive for (unlocking them all and seeing what each new sector has in store)

I feel like the whole game has gone downhill since the Enraged Koala Patch, just an honest personal opinion.
I hope for the next version they re-start from Furious Koala, add whatever content is in Enraged Koala, and this time don't half-ass the update. (i.e. Missing items, broken chests, other bs)

I may seem a little upset on this post. That's because I am.

The point of the unstable build branch is to prevent normal builds from going to hell and getting as you put it "fucked up" its to keep people like yourself from having a reason to complain and keep you happy and not destroy your progress as much, as for the removing of sectors nothings changing overall only difference is you dont click some greek letter to find better stuff. You will still be fighting bosses and other things to get better gear, progression is not solely based on "you unlocked this yay now unlock something else" some view other things as a form of progression in their own minds like finding a good world with some better materials to make something nicer to live in or farm better.

To many people whine and complain about the game starting to suck or go downhill, wait till the damn thing is finished and everything in place before you whine about how its set up what you see now is not even remotely what the final product is going to be, as for those going on about this being payed beta/alpha, it was not, you payed for a PREORDER the beta/alpha was a bonus for preordering.

For those upset just calm down and wait to see what happens in the end before letting yourselves get upset over it. Thank you for enduring this post needed to blow some of that steam off.

Good day ladys and gentlemen :3

Dude, I'd like you to remember you it's a beta.

Plus, progression as it is right now is linear and boring after you unlocked X sector. But it's indeed somehow a placeholder right now.

You can be upset, but you can't be sincere when you say you wanna the game to get back to a more rudimentary gameplay and how the game handle the new updates.

I also recommend you to wait until the official release if you can't withstand a beta.

Whoot! We in New Zealand approve of the fixed update size.
i also decided to jump onto the "Unstable - More beta then beta" version before even reading any of this hahaha.
Just saw it there and was all like "Hmm whats this? Sounds fun!!"

Archinois already replied a lot of the stuff I was about to say :p
But just a small tip, always back your saves up before an update! (frequently backing up saves is always a good idea, especially in games with only one saveslot)

I have found a small problem in the unstable version...

My character was already upgraded to tier 10 but was unable to make the skyrail crafting table. He was able to make durasteel, however..

The fix was to re-apply all the starmap upgrades up to the durasteel tech upgrade... Fortunately I already had a full set ready to use on a friends server (if he ever stops playing Star Wars The Old Republic)... Even more fortunately, the upgrades are not consumed when you use them.

I would also consider backing up those backups
    backup all the things!!!

If I had any doubts that you have absolutely no internal testing whatsoever, this pretty much clears it. Before, I could accept that you made sure patches "sort-of" worked before we got them, but what I understood from this post is that they're gonna go from the dev's keystrokes straight to steam. Why use all that money on an actual QA or equivalent department when you can get us to do it, right?

  17. Claith

They would test it themselves instead of hiring a dedicated QA team. This is completely voluntary, so it isn't forced onto those that want a stable experience. They do have some basic testing, but for example of the chests despawning, they likely had a new character and didn't see anything wrong, so the patch went through. The project and team is small enough that they can do this. This isn't enterprise software with 30 times the budget (did get a lot more funding than anticipated) and stricter time requirements. Proper testing for each small change would easily triple the development time.

Wording is a fun thing, but you are implying that they are trying to cut corners. They are letting people that want to do the testing for them do it. The field is so wide, it should catch most bugs, or at least point them in the direction in good time instead of making boundary tests, unit tests, regression tests, and all the other sorts of tests slowing development. Most people want the development to go faster after all.

I get what you're saying, and I understand. No one forces us to participate in this "unstable patch" thing. No one even forces us to report bugs as we play the game. Thats fine. I guess what Im trying to voice is my disillusionment with the way CF is developing the game.
Since the game went live for us to play it, they announced their move to a new office space, plans for the development of a new game, and I just dont feel very confident about the whole thing. I wished they would just finish what they started before tackling more things and, perhaps more importantly, dont make promises they cant, or wont keep, like near daily patches.

just because someone expresses excitement for other projects doesn't mean they've become bored with the previous lol. it's like bands who release multiple concept albums about the same story over time. it's like them saying, "we'll be recording the second album over the next five months, which is great! we'd also love to tell you guys that we're already working on material for the third album." same idea. they'll damn sure spend the 5 fives months recording, but that doesn't stop them from writing new material and doing other things besides recording album 2.
