Not only trees.

So, all the screenshots I saw contained some type of tree-like plants, but why make them all trees?
It is an alien world so I would like to see some organisms that behave similar to trees, but aren't. Like, if in some planet a strange energy comes from the ground in certain biomes, this "plants" would grow in these areas, with a shape optimized for recollecting that energy (like a leaf or something like that).
I'm suggesting this because it would be too monotonous to have only trees in every planet.
Hope you like it and sorry if there was another thread like this.

I actually would agree with you here. There might be other plants but all they've shown us are tree so far. I hope the devs are just teasing and saving the juicy stuff for later.

Are you suggesting we make mutant trees like the Wamping Willow?
Trees that attack us when we try to chop them, but they are disguised as normal ones.

Maybe there can be "tree" that is like childrens draw it? You know, stick and a circle, it's looking like a lolipop :D

That monster would be good too, like a mimic.
But I meant organisms that have the same behaviour of trees (almost can't move, grows in certain areas with shapes that let them gather resources) but don't have the same composition/shape/abilities (they could transform oxygen into poisonous gas).
I imagine some as the shape of an inverted flower with large petals, and they can absorb some polen/mist/etc. that comes out of the ground. You know, something alien-like.

Maybe they aren't really trees, but a sentient species of super plant capable of destroying all of the universe!

Beside standard trees, we can have:

    1. Large, tree-like cactii.
    2. Huge flowers, with petals and such. Lots of variations here.
    3. Bamboo.
    4. Enlarged grass of various types.
    5. Huge mushrooms.
    6. Giant fern. Damn I love it, on some planet with dinosaurs there should be forests composed of giant fern. Anyone who does remember some school biology should agree that it makes sense.

Also, standard trees could be really different in composition, not only in basic texturing. Pine (I admit that there are were some trees at screenshots which could pass as an alien pine) and fir, for starters. Then — eucalyptus (again, probably already saw something similar, but it should be huge), sequoia (same as equcalyptus), banyan (another pic), baobab.

Thanks for putting this here, I'm fairly new to following Starbound development.

That was (unfortunately) just a suggestion, not an information about known events in development.

think it would be cool to have mobs act like trees or have plant like creatures which act like plants and stuff and dont hurt us unless we chop them down xD

It was shown in the Starmap about different biome-like structures or plants, large vines cascading from the roof of a cave, with pink flowers sprouting off of it's seeds, so, by that info, we can most likely assume that the whole different biome thin is indeed already in effect, I assume they've jumped on it if they're already working on crops, different and unusual biome patterns and what not, seems suitable.

Im pretty sure there are crystal trees, or is that only on a wallpaper I saw?

Clicked through expecting a discussion on shrubbery. I agree that plant life should look different on each planet. I'm not sure how much different it will look though. Entirely new vegetation structures will require a completely different generation model and assets.

what about giant bramble like tree ? and rhyzome like tree (tree with a big part just under the floor) or life tree biome (a giant tree perapse used as dungeaon, with a part over the floor level and an other under) and it could be extensible to vegetal planets (all the floor is wood)

Even though it may be harder to do as far as programming it'd break up the monotony of trees everywhere... it would be nifty to have more than one type of tree/large plant on a single planet in the same biome like regular trees mixed with giant ferns or mushrooms or just a huge leaf on a stalk.

It wouldn't be right just to have trees. They could add other layers of shrubs or bushes to the background, at least make the forests look thicker. A jungle isn't really a jungle if it isn't dense and covered in flora. after all.

I think i've seen some tree/tentacle in one of the starbound videos.
Or maybe its just a backround.
