Not able to make Steel?

I beat the first boss and made the metalwork station, but it's not giving me the option to make steel?

I don't have "materials available" checked, and even if I did I've got iron and coal. Because of this I'm kinda stuck in the dark ages, technologically.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug?

 

I had the same issue.

You need to construct the Star Map Upgrade FIRST and use it, then all the new stuff unlocks!

Same for the robot workbench!

 

You need to make the ship upgrade chip to get to the Beta sector before all the 2nd Tier items pop up

 

For some reason I didn't notice any new recipes until I checked back again later after visiting a Beta Sector planet. You could try that if you haven't.

 

I've constructed the star map but am unsure how to use it. It was pretty much the first thing I made once I had the metalwork station, but since it doesn't say how to actually activate it, it's just been sitting in my storage.

EDIT: I got it now...had to put it in my hot bar first, couldn't just pick it up from the inventory and click outside it like you can blueprints. Thank you!

 

Make sure you're holding it and just left click.
