    That's a good question, actually.

I guess it depends on how they handle the tiered system in general. You may be able to purchase the materials and tools that you need to progress using your income. There is supposed to be a main quest, but is it actually required to complete it to get anywhere? It would be nice if it weren't.

At the very least, you should be able to acquire everything related to the task you're doing though. I could understand if you need to do some fighting to make it to the harder planets, but you shouldn't need to do that just to find rare seeds or cool gadgets for your garden and the like.

Hmm... it's my understanding that the 'professions' were more of an optional way to supplement income rather than being a set hard path.

For example: Lets say a main quest requires you to find a particular item before fighting a boss. (satellite beacon) The options could be:

    1. farm enough food and sell to purchase from an NPC (farmer).
    2. craft enough items and sell to purchase from an NPC (crafter).
    3. Steal the item from the NPC risking negative standing with the town (rogue)
    4. Find the item yourself (miner)

Either way, the item you must retrieve will not circumvent fighting the boss or the story ...

Also, Based on the July 9th post, the character will be stranded on the first planet they land on and that planet is likely to be void of tier >1 metals due to balancing reasons, but whether the character will be unable to craft tier >1 weapons / items without acquiring an unlock, like before, is undetermined.
