True, would be hilarious for a while though.

Maybe, but giving vanity items actual in-game use goes completely against the idea of vanity items in general.

Oh, if modability will be even half as extensive and user-friendly as we were being told, I am quite sure that at least some vanity items will be either modified or deleted on some private servers. Other than that, 'don't use vanity clothes if you're so sensitive to realism' point is irrelevant as many will already know to not don idiotic costumes if that's not their taste - but they still will see others in such.

But as long as it will be possible to take them out, I don't see why they shouldn't be added. Whoever will want to have them, will have such option, whoever won't want such - again, if it will be possible to take them out very easily - should be able to tailor the game to his own taste as well. Everyone's content.

Also, yes. The items are called vanity items because they're for the sake of aesthetics only. Adding any gameplay-affecting qualities to them is against the very idea behind such items.

I think it would be fair if you could turn vanity items on and off with a server option. Since I assume the bulk of the servers are going to be hosted by the community I think it would be rather nice if people could choose for their server.

I personally like vanity items, but I can see the issue as well.

Honestly, there are 2 possible solutions I really liked so far in this thread.
    1) making them augment armor instead of cover or hide it.
    2) making them take up the armor slot, meaning you couldn't wear it on hazardous planets.

which expounding on number 2 I had an idea.

Simply have a server toggle "allow vanity slots".
this says nothing about vanity items, just the slots, if slots were off then vanity items would have to be worn in place of armor, if slots were on it function a la Terraria.
there, now everyone is happy, just make it per server, but even on the "off" server you can wear vanity items in safe areas perfectly fine, but not in 'danger zones'.

Vanity items are awesome. And always will be awesome. As long as not for additional monies.
    No exceptions. :)

If you prefer not to break immersion, then dont do it. There is a plethora of people, including myself, who enjoys vanity items to make their character suit their visual preferences, as opposed to being tied down by the aesthetics of whatever the best armours are. This isnt the first time I have seen a topic and asked myself why those who oppose cant just not use it, or if you like certain aspects of it, simply use it however you see fit. Being a single player or private multiplayer game for the most part, its not as if you are going to have to worry about people abusing it in a way you dislike, unless you join an open server.

Why not just use Modest's idea and give us an option to hide vanity armor? That way we wouldn't have to craft a tuxedo for every planet in the galaxy.

If I hide vanity items, everyone around me will be wearing some dull armor with high stats. That would be boring.

  12. Well you didn't take into account that Starbound has a "random and diverse nature." They will still be various.

At the same time that might be awkward for looks, too.
If armor has random stats and colors like weapons do then you might have the best stats on a pink space helmet, a lime green leather armor chest piece, brown pants and orange sneakers. :cautious:

Although if you had the option to change the color of your equipment, say more than two color choices, as many variants as the equipment has to offer perhaps. You could have any color weapon and equipment you want.

  16. It's not like color is a factor to the stats. At least, not yet.

I am a personal fan of showing the heck off, to the point where I once spent 20 dollars on a virtual suit of armor just to get at an iron mask, so I could make my character look like a mage that met lucha libre.

I am a bad bad person

I personally wish this game would add in a fox mask. I miss being fast and furry to the monsters I meet

I'm probably gonna dress up as some sort of reaper or assassin myself. :)
Um, provided such vanity outfits exist.
From the sound of it there's a quite a bit of variety from knight armor to space suits.

I really fail to understand the vivid dislike of making vanity items more seamlessly integrated as compared to sudden and jarring.
